Government Stance 'Legally & Morally Redundant' - says Sargent

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday March 20, 2003 16:19author by Graham Caswell - Green Party Report this post to the editors

Press elease

Green Party Leader, Trevor Sargent TD, speaking in the Dáil against the Government Iraq motion today said that the Coalition's position was morally and legally redundant in continuing to facilitate the US military use Shannon.

Mr. Sargent said that as a neutral country like Austria or Sweden, cooperation with a belligerent country would be in breach of international law and the Hague Convention. "As a member of the UN the Irish Government's action contravenes the UN Charter."

Deputy Sargent said that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's stance was a fraud with complete disregard for the honourable tradition of neutrality espoused by Eamon de Valera and Frank Aiken.

He said that it was important to highlight that even New York city council, which had been devastated by September 11, had voted against this war. "Significant numbers of e-mails are being received by my office from people who work in US companies in Ireland. They are angry that they are being used as justification for the continued use of the facilities at Shannon by the US military."

Mr. Sargent has challenged the Taoiseach to produce the Attorney General's legal opinion on the Irish Government's support for the US military's continued use of Shannon. We have heard plenty of the Government's political rhetoric on the continued use of Shannon but no sound legal opinion.

Mr. Sargent called on the Taoiseach to support the call by US Green campaigner and former Presidential candidate, Ralph Nader, to get agreement from President Bush that anti-personnel weaponry such as cluster bombs and landmines would not be used. "Civilians will be more affected by these weapons than combatants. They will affect not only Iraqis but US citizens. They will affect Michael Bermingham, an Irishman, who is still in Baghdad. Will the Taoiseach make use of the sacrifice that Michael Bermingham is making in risking his own life to make the argument to the US administration and impress on it that war will kill innocent people from different countries?"

People like you and Bush talk about non-violence, but what you really mean is giving in to violence. Violence can be used to stop violence.

It's the only thing that's going to stop Bush now.

People like yourself and Bush might think that violence is right, but then ignorant thugs are all the same.

The lot of you with your anger and your hatred and your inability to comprehend other perspectives make me sick.

I hope you grow out of it.

They are all tactics. The important thing is their effectiveness. We have seen that Sargent's mewling and whining and attacks on non-violent protestors has bolstered this government.

This is now the time for non violent direct action. (but there may be a time for violent action later).

Sargent and Gormley and the rest of the GP that have refused to take effective action are as culpable as the FF gombeens.

This will be remembered.

Trying to distort the call for STOPPING THE WAR by any means necessary into a lame arsed argument about violence (you call for window smashing etc) is unsurprising from someone that supports the GP.

Yes, politicians ARE all scum. They promise again and again (like the Green Party in Germany to eliminate nukes) to do things and then don't do them.

Politicians are scum! ALL of them! The political system must be destroyed!! Rule of law must end! Tear the system down! (yawn)

Sounds like Bush and his attitude towards international law.

If you don't like politicians you should go live in Somalia for a while and have a look at the alternative.

Of course, knowledge might interfere with your certainty and your authority issues!

Best stay out of the real world.

Anger! Anger! Anger!! Hate! Hate! Hate!

(Why not try peace and respect other people and their methods?)

And this is backed up by Gormley asking the protestors to move aside to let out the scumbags from the Dail.

Just to make it clear to your low intelligence "i" the most effective DA that Sargent could take would be to help occupy Shannon Warport. If he wants to break a few windows I won't condemn it, but I don't think it's particularly effective.

His CREDIBILITY? The mewling little fool doesn't have any. I know you political scum are keen on preserving your image, but I never thought you'd admit it.

Sargent and the Green Party are going down, down, down. Yiz can forget any chance of a vote. You're part of the system and you're complicit in this war.

If I get a chance I'm egging the fecker.

Trevor Sargent caused the war and is holding up the evil capitalist structure single-handedly, no doubt. His anti-government rhetoric in the dail is just a smokescreen.

if only he'd join the angry kids on the streets and break a few windows he'd gain so much credibility and get so much done.

of course, the angry kids on the street don't vote and most people don't seem to be ready for revolutionary chaos. but if trevor would just get out there they'd wake up and follow him.

go trevor!

It is quite obvious at this stage that Sargeant's parliamentary remonstrances are not going to have any effect. It is time to call for mass direct action and for the Green Party to stop supporting the criminal government which is trashing our constitution. Continuing to provide a facade of democratic respectability to the State by participating in the farce called the Dail and eschewing calling for Direct Action places Sargeant in a disgusting position.
