While the US and UK will seek United Nations endorsement of an "appropriate post-conflict administration", US officials made it clear the UN would have no political authority in postwar Iraq and its role would be mainly humanitarian. "Iraqi democracy will have to be defined by the Iraqi people," Mr Grossman said. Answering a question, he said he hoped that one of the first decisions of a new Iraqi government would be to recognise the state of Israel.

Jump To Comment: 1Have you considered that just MAYBE this was "engineered". After all, going in as a UN operation would have resulted in maintaining the territorial integrity of Iraq and maybe that's not what the US has in mind. Maybe the non-cooperation of Turkey was likewise engineered. Maybe the bizarre clumsiness and not helping the UN inspecotrs find the WMDs was a plan.
No of course not, an occupied Iraq can't be forced to "recognize" Israel. But "Kurdistan" might do do willingly. And it's in "Kurdistan" where the big oil reserves are (in case this is about oil). And gee, the Kurds wouldn't have any reason to be grateful to the EU. Of course gratitude doesn't last long, almost surely not more than a few decades, but hey, the oil won't either.
Everybody has been acting as if the US intends to betray the Kurds. But what if it's the opposite? Does THAT make sense of the last few months.
