IRA must respect the people

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday March 18, 2003 16:21author by Robby - RNauthor email rob_s57 at hotmail dot comauthor address Dungannon Report this post to the editors

THE vast majority of people in Northern Ireland see themselves as victims, to a greater or lesser extent, of each of the many IRA atrocities.

And they will not accept a situation whereby some character will be able to admit an offence in connection with an atrocity, without even having to make an appearance, and a judge or adjudicator will thank them for their admission, mark the case off the list, and then allow the perpetrators to wander off into the sunset with debt to society cleared and anonymity secured.

Nor indeed will they accept a situation which could arise whereby an underling of a terrorist organisation admits to an offence which they may not have committed to cover up for some or other well known public figure (a take-the-rap case) and the police pursue the matter no further.

The majority are entitled to demand that their moral and human rights are satisfied. They are entitled to know who the transgressors are and to retain the right to give or withhold their individual forgiveness.

The Governments and others must not dilute morals for the sake of political gains.

Governments dilute morals on a daily basis, that's what they do!

One need look no farther than the Lee Clegg fiasco and the Bloody Sunday Inquiry to see the sort of high farce they can mount to cover themselves.

In this environment it is highly unlikely that either the IRA or the loyalists for that matter will be willing to take all of the blame, which is what you seem to imply by your posting.

Dream on!

I think that was a fair enough post. It's important that the truth comes out about the past in Northern Ireland, but in most cases it can be handled in a sensitive way. The most logical suggestion I have heard mentioned is one where families can approach the authorities to see what information they have on, for arguments sake, a son who was murdered. The police, or whoever shall then take them through the investigation process, showing wjhat details they have (if that is possible). In many cases, certainly anyone that I know who wants to find our information, people just want to see whether or not it was proven who was responsible for a death close to them. In some cases, the perpetrators are dead. Most families are just looking to bring closure to this part of their lives - revenge has nothing to do with it, as is sometimes the misunderstanding

I think revenge would be a large part of it for some people. The other thing is thst often the RUC/PSNI got the wrong person, sometimes deliberately. It's a ridiculous idea. Now if IRA men on the run admitted what they had done in exchange for not being charged that might make more sense. Your way would be a huge gift to people on both sides who put target lists together.

Dying English imperialism must respect the people of Ireland and stop lying about their history.
