''THE St. Patrick’s Day parade is to stop for a one-minute “pause for peace” as it makes its way through Dublin on Monday, March 17.

White flags will also line the River Liffey in a gesture showing support for a peaceful resolution to the Iraqi crisis.

The measure was voted on by the majority of Dublin city councilors at their monthly meeting in Dublin on Monday night, although all the Fianna Fail councilors present voted against the motion.''

Maybe black flags of mourning would be more appropriate. Mourning for the children of Iraq. Mourning for Irish neutrality, and mourning for our self-respect which bertie has dragged in the mud.

The white in the irish flag represents the hope for peace between the two communities, orange and green, so at least in ireland white carries the symbolism of aspiration for peace, which is at least more positive than black mourning flags if nothing else.

It was Labour Councillors that tabled the motion passed at Dublin City Council on the 03/03/03.
After a twenty minute debate, during which former Lord Mayor Michael Mulcahy (FF) claimed Labour was "hijacking St. Patrick's Day" , 15 voted against and twenty voted in favour.

The motion read as follows........

Dublin City Council is deeply concerned at recent UN and NGO figures indicating that, in the event of a military invasion of Iraq, over 80,000 civilians could be killed, over half a million could require medical treatment as a result of direct or indirect injuries, over three million could be made homeless, and a further three million displaced.

Dublin City Council further recognises the deep public concern in Dublin, and throughout Ireland, at the prospect of a war being conducted against the people of Iraq. That concern was most recently expressed on February 15th, when over 100,000 of our fellow citizens engaged in a peaceful march for peace.

In order to give public expression to these concerns, Dublin City Council will therefore arrange for white flags of peace to be flown along the River Liffey. We will further recommend that those organising this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin arrange for a one-minute "Pause for Peace" to be observed at noon on St. Patrick's Day.

It is our intention both the white flags and the 'Pause for Peace' outlined in this motion should not only express our opposition to any war being conducted against the people of Iraq, but should also commemorate the suffering endured by the Iraqi people under the dictatorial regime of President Saddam Hussein.

We further condemn Saddam Hussein's brutal dictatorship and support all peaceful means to secure his removal.

White is also the traditional colour in the Islamic World for mouring. In that it's appropriate.

It's also the colour of martyrdom.

Is the international sign of surrender. Doesn't matter about the other stuff because using it in the form of a flag is the sign of surrender.
