Greens fear Shannon will be used by U S without 2nd UN resolution

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday March 12, 2003 21:29author by Graham Caswell - Green Party Report this post to the editors

Press Release

The Green Party today expressed its concern about the possibility of Shannon Airport being used by US forces in the absence of a second UN resolution.

Green Party Chairman and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, John Gormley, T.D., said that the Taoiseach' s replies to the Dáil this morning were part of a 'softening up' exercise to prepare people for this eventuality.

"Government sources have already indicated that so called US humanitarian flights would be allowed use Shannon even if there were no second UN resolution. This morning in the House the Taoiseach indicated that France and Germany, who oppose a second resolution, would allow landing and overflights in their countries.

The implication was very clear. If they could do so why shouldn't Ireland? Although he stopped short of saying this and reverted to his old strategy of stating that he would make a decision at the appropriate time, it's clear that this government at this stage is well disposed towards allowing the Americans to use Shannon, even in the absence of a second resolution. If the Taoiseach goes down this road, he will experience the greatest backlash of his political career. There will be a repeat of the recent huge demonstration and there could well be civil unrest at Shannon itself."

"As it stands the public are outraged by the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US military while innocent Iraqis have already been bombed, but if Shannon Airport is used while a full scale war is taking place the reaction against the government will be overwhelming," concluded deputy Gormley.

Its time to take legal action against Ahern who is, according to 70 lawyers, a criminal.

author by Tim Houriganpublication date Thu Mar 13, 2003 01:27author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I have already tried to have him and other government members charged (file is still with DPP as of last query)

IF every person who believes these acts to be criminal, lodges a complaint with the police then there will be a reaction.

The government has serious charges to answer, and we should formally request the Gardai to investigate them and bring them before the courts.

But we all have to put our money where our mouth is if we want it to work.

if you want a copy of my latest draft of the criminal charge (to guide you with your own) then mail me [email protected]

There's no point allowign the charade to continue, that what's happening now is legal, but will only become a 'subject for review' if the blitz breaks out.

a>it's likely to happen while Bush is brown-nosing / getting spanked in the White House

b> If Shannon is closed to the US military after the blitz starts, it will be a poor attempt to feign respect for the law, given that the majority of troops and weapons are already through.

The CRIME has happened. There's no need to debate that fact.

IF that's how you feel, get to your local garda station and lodge a complaint. DO NOT LEAVE until they accept it, tell them you are serious and not attempting to waste police time.

I can send you some relevant legislation if you like and it would be cool if some of the Lawyers who made the press statement could help too.
I'll talk to one of them tomorrow in court in Shannon.

With respect Graham, if ye hold such concern about Shannon, why were ye not there during the March 1st demo? Why instead did ye totally turn ye're back on it and publicly announce that ye were not supporting it?

I know you will reply by saying it was because of the planned direct action. But there was also a totally SEPERATE, totally peaceful protest organized by the IAWM, as you well know.

There was nothing stopping the Greens, Labour and Sinn Fein attending this march whilst still publicly declaring that ye did not support the direct action.

I have a lot of time & respect for the Greens but was highly dissapointed by this move, and it was damaging to the movement trying to clear Shannon of those war planes.

On the marches (both GNAW and IAWM) there were quite a few Green PArty members. Anyone who might have been speechifying was doing it at the Party Conference in Ennis, where Patricia McKenna went well over her alloted time to give out stink about the war. She then came through Shannon airport to fly to New York to meet Kofi Annan.

I still think that the Greens should have been a bit more like Michael D Higgins & Joe Higgins on this one, but to be fair they had called the conference before the march was called and were working to get in on live tv.
To expect Sargent & Co to abandon their own party conference is a bit much, especially when it made for an anti-war item on the news all by itself.
McKenna's speech and Brian Meaney holding up pictures of Iraqi kids was on the RTE news right after the item on the demo. 2 for the price of one.

Forget harrassing the Greens, let's get Bertie & the other criminals.

Your comment:-

"Forget harrassing the Greens, let's get Bertie & the other criminals."

As I said, I have a lot of respect for the Greens, in fact I have a load of respect for them. I don't mean to be harrassing them but was just expressing my dissapointment about their attitude to the March 1st demo.

I understood they were against it in principle becuase of the direct action and not just because their conference was going on at the same time.

Maybe I am wrong on this?

I didn't and am sure no one did expect Sargent & Co to abandon their own party conference. But I did expect them to come out and publicly (in the media, i.e.) support the peacful march. By which, from all the accounts I've heard, they didn't.

But again I reiterate my strong support for the Green's and my admiration of the likes of McKenna, Sargent, Gormley & Boyle.
