European Young Socialists oppose war on Iraq national |

 At a gathering of young socialist and social democract activists from around Europe at the weekend a position of complete opposition to the proposed war on Iraq was adopted. The bi-annual congress of ECOSY (European Young Socialists) met last weekend and adopted a strong anti war stance with an overwhelming majority. The meeting which took place in Sweden had representatives from across the EU as well as from applicant countries in Eastern Europe. The Young Socialists adopted a position calling for global disarmament of all those who harbour weapons of mass destruction as well as conventional weapons. The gathering also adopted a position against the war even in the event of a second UN resolution and called on UN security council members to use the veto against a second resolution if necessary. The resolution was supported by a wide viariety of socialist organisations from around Europe including Labour Youth (Ireland) and the not so socialist Young Labour and Labour students (UK). |
