Friday February 28, 2003 21:54 by Sean Thompson
American capitalist and extreme right-winger, William Flynn, has issued a call for the IRA to complete its surrender. Flynn with his largesse and influence played a key role in initiating the surrender process. Blair and Aherne are eager to get a deal done so that British troops can be freed up for Anglo-American Imperial adventures. The Sinn Fein leadership is playing a key role in this pacification process. So all they can do is have a Sinn Fein T.D. issue a weak statement calling on Aherne to issue a statement. Aherne, by allowing Shannon to be used by the American war machine, is complicit in the impending mass murder of 1,000s of Iraqi civilians. Do ye really think a candle-lit vigil will stop Aherne aiding and abetting mass murder?

I guess these days Sinn Fein reserves the use of violence to disciplining drug dealers who have moved onto their turf (see greater Tralee area hash dealers abductions last year. It is a oity that Sinn Fein's "respectability has reached such a stage that they can't been seen protesting with "law breakers and violent protestors". Good luck in the next government lads, well see you on the other side of the fence.
Conservative Irish-Americans have assimilated fully the leadership of Sinn Fein into the dominant power structure. They cannot, in reality, oppose a war that is being promoted by their friends in America. They are reduced to meaningless statements and and inocuous middle-class candle-light vigils.
How can the Sinn Fein party, which is begging Bush's poodle, Blair, to be allowed back into Stormont to administer British rule in Ireland be anti-imperialist?
Sinn Fein did not have one banner or one placard on the Belfast demo and only a few of their top members turned up at the last moment for a token photo shoot when they realised thousands were taking to the streets.
Dear chris,
I would suggest that Sinn Fein do not want to allow groups such as grassroots to hijack the chance of getting 100,000 people or more on the streets again in the run up to the US led war against Iraq.
It is entirely possible that grassroots has been established with the mission to undermine and divide the peace movement. This would be entirely consistent with the strategies of tension which have been pursued in the past in Italy to discredit the left, and in Britian to undermine trade-unions to name but a few.
Given Harneys comments on anti-americanism and remarks against Sinn Fein it wouldn't surprise me if grassroots wasn't being run by the government using special-branch gardai?
Do not break down the fence at Shannon ... let's concentrate on getting 500,000 on the streets in a few weeks time!
sounds exactly like the kind of argument used against the republican movement and young militant republicans in the past: don't riot in the streets of Belfast or Derry, you might spoil the chances of the civil rights movement, the nationalist emancipation, the peace process, .......
Don't you feel slightly bigot to withdraw your support on the grounds of "yuck, they might use violence and thus alienate..." - well, who exactly???
Aherne is a collaborator with the U.S. killing machine. He is an accessory to mass murder. In this context direct action is, as Dan Berrigan put it, 'an act of justice and compassion'. Sinn Fein are part of the system.

Koko, the 100,000 turned out AFTER DA had taken place, Eoins, Marys & the CWM. I think the SF leadership are wrong. perhaps the armani suits are having an effect. There are SF activists who disagree with the leadership.

No koko, this is exactly the sort of thing which was said about the republican movement for years. @It was set up by FF", even now you are hearing nonsense abou how SF & the IRA are hand in glove with imperialism.
I disagree with the GFA but I dont want to see a return to war. I also know that there are many socialists in the ranks of the Republican Movement
I have differences with SF, but I dont believe the lis & misrepresentation being spread. On many occasions I have fought it here on indy.

Koko, check out GNAW you will see that many of the groups & individuals involved have a long record of leftwing activism. Some of us were even involved in the H Block/Armagh campaign & in the Anti Amendment campaign in 1983.
"Do not break down the fence at Shannon ... let's concentrate on getting 500,000 on the streets in a few weeks time!"
I can only say that DA has worked so far. 3 US airlines have diverted from Shannon
The cheek of them! Barring their members from Shannon under threat of kneecapping just because there would have been a bit of real action instead of the usual boring pricking around of just parading around town like a bunch of fools (The swm/sp/sinn fein the workers party/green party/labour party/trade union/roman catholic church and now provo position). You provos are f**king hypocrites of the highest order! You'd blow an honest, decent hard-working British Soldier or Policeman to bits just because he doesn't have the same f**king religion as you.
March 1 revealed SF's interpretation of "total decommissioning":you don't only turn in your guns and bombs (which I applaud) but also your political backbone and convictions. So civil disobedience is not a means of protest any more? Irish military dealing with simple "disorderly behaviour is ok?just because they aren't British? What happened to the marchers of the seventies?Maybe having the carrot of power-sharing dangled in front of your nose interferes with your clear vision?Power comes from the people, and they don't want this war!
