Labour and Green Party join 'there will be violence' chorus

RTE midday news has reported that Labour, Sinn Fein and the Green Party are telling their members not to attend tomorrows direct action at Shannon. Despite the fact that EVERYONE involved in organising the protest has said that it will be non-violent these parties are inventing a threat of violence to try and scare people away. Don't fall for this dishonest rubbish.

Sinn Fein were included in the headline announcement but not mentioned in the text so RTE may have made a mistake. Anyone from SF able to clarify this. There is something a little unlikely about SF being scared off a non-violent protest by the threat of state violence. (The boys in blue are the only organisation that has yet to commit to non-violence tomorrow).

As we approach the start of a war the softer elements will fall by the wayside. When the war starts the Labour Party, SF, and Greens, PANA and AfrI etc. will be under severe presure to support the war. Afterall the likes of Labour, and SF are supported financially by Big Business donations.

If the UN backs the war, which is likely to happen, we will definatly see the softer elements jump onto the pro-war camp.

HAVE NO ILLUSIONS IN LABOUR/PANA/SF/GREENS!

RTE News at One has repeated this story in more detail including a statement from Sinn Fein. This would be pretty damn funny if it wasn't so serious. Kneecapping joyriders is OK but tearing down a fence is violence. Truly irony is dead!!!

At least in the headlines, after the break they are promising a story under the heading 'Political parties run for cover as mass tresspass is planned at Shannon'.

Have no illusions in the SP or SWP either, they have shown their true mettle by sabotaging the Mar 1 DA.

RBB is facilitating his eventual transfer to Labour.

Given the SPs ambivalence towards British Imperialism they may have difficulties in continuing to actively oppose the war if the Brits get involved in the Bush adventure.

Up North they wont even picket British Army recruting offices. Hardly surprising given their support for a British Army recruiting stall in QUB a few months back.

He said that the march the 1st march was initially called for by the Irish anti-war movement when in fact the call was made by Anarchist groups and it was always a call for direct action, the peacefull march was always only in support of the symbolic tresspass.

author by Andrewpublication date Fri Feb 28, 2003 14:53author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Actually what happened was the GNAW (which is not just anarchist groups) decided to have a direct action on March 1st and approached the IAWM with the suggestion that they should march that day. When we did so we discovered that they had also already decided to call a demonstration for March 1st. This isn't that surprizing, going to Shannon two weeks after the 15th was kind of obvious. So the two were called independently and without knowledge of each others plans, not the first time this happened.

Sinn Fein has not instructed members not to go to Shannon. All dublin cummain, at least, have been encouraged to attend either the demo in Dublin or Shannon. I haven't seen or heard or any statement from Sinn Fein telling members not to go to Shannon tomorrow.

Hopefully tommorow will be well attended by people of all political parties and persuasion.

How has the SWP or SP sabotaged the DA?????
It hasn't even happened yet, can you see into the future?

author by Joepublication date Fri Feb 28, 2003 15:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Oh come on Angela, its common knowledge that over the last months the SWP has been running a 'whispering campaign' in the IAWM designed to innoculate activists against the GNAW. You've been telling people that we are violent and uncontrollable and shouldn't be spoken to. Now it appears that particular chicken has come home to roost as PANA, Labour, Green Party and SF took you at your word.

They have done so by spreading disinformation about the proposed events. RBB talking down the likely numbers. Dheoch & M. O'brien trying to scare off people by talking about the need for medics.

WHEN HAVE THE SP EVER PROVIDED MEDICS AT A DEMO?

Just look at their comments here over the past week or so.
