CRITICAL MASS DUBLIN - FEB 23 (vs. MIJAG)

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 11, 2002 13:18author by pathauthor email rhizomix at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Next Dublin Critical Mass

The next Dublin Critical Mass is taking place on Saturday February 23rd (the last Saturday of the month). Assembly point as always is the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square, at 2pm. Bring your bike and any whistles, flags, horns or whatever you think adds colour and noise! We hand out leaflets promoting cycling as a healthy, green, relaxing alternative to gridlock and road rage!

This will be the last Critical Mass on a Saturday until much later on in the year. In March we will be reverting to the standard 'last Friday of the month at 6pm' when its brighter, I think the clocks go forward in mid March so this will help the Mass even more.

Also, just with reference to MIJAGuar's campaign. I was down in Cork on Saturday but regrettably I had to get a train back in the early afternoon, so I didnt get a chance to see their 'Car Rally', which they had extensively postered around the city. I was genuinely interested in heading along along to the Lee Fields where they were assembling and having a discussion/argument with the organisers and their supporters (does anyone know if they got a crowd down?)

If MIJAG hold a car rally in Dublin then I think the Critical Mass should get together and hold a counter rally on the same day. The CM is all about promoting cycling as a real alternative to motoring. I saw a MIJAG car rally a good while ago and their supporter epitomised everything I hate about flash young motorists. Boot spoilers, low racing skirts, tinted windows, chrome exhausts, fuel injection, go faster stripes, sporting alloys, silver plated gearsticks, total status symbols, the type of car that can reach 0-60 in 10 seconds, and the drivers normally test that ratio on suburban and urban roads.

Does this mean that Critical Mass now support the car insurance rip off. Do you now support the capitalist insurance and banking industries in their exploitation of drivers especially young drivers?

It just proved what I always thought to be true about alot of those CM types. They are nothing but a bunch of misinformed middle class boycotteers that do not only hate the working class but blame them for all the worlds problems. Why don't they just have a wash, get Daddy get you a job and leave politics to people that actually take it seriously.

Yes I do support the exploitation of young drivers. I support the exploitation of ALL drivers. Young, old, short, tall, skinny, fat, I do not give a fuck what "class" they are, what socio-economic group you say they belong to, what car they drive, how much it cost them, how much insurance they pay, how much their tax is, waah waah waah. I want EVERYONE OUT OF THEIR CARS AND ON BIKES. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME. I want to see expensive insurance for EVERY SINGLE DRIVER. Not only do I want young drivers to pay 8 times the normal premiums, I want to see older drivers pay it as well. I want as many financial, legal, political, cultural, and physical barriers in place in every city, suburb, county, town and parish in this country to stop motorists getting in their cars and killing people and FUCKING DESTROYING MY BEAUTIFUL CITY. Do you understand me. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME. You cannot convince me with any superficial argument. Cars are making my city, Dublin, into a filthy shithole.

And maybe you should come down to the Critical Mass next time to see the diverse bunch of people there - and who gives a fuck what class you are, "class politics", bullshit tired old jargon from clapped-out failed theorists. _Everyone_ can make the world a better place. It doesnt matter if you make 10k a year on an assembly line or 25k a year sitting in front of a PC, you can act in ways that are GENUINELY revolutionary TODAY. Not tomorrow, not next year, TODAY. Dont let inverse snobbery throw you from making the revolution happen. Because when it comes, its going to be real.

Critical Mass is a wonderful celebration of resistance to the destruction of our health that the Capitalist machine forces upon us. It is an immediate and practical way to reduce the murder of working class people in our cities whether by slow deaths caused by vehicle emissions or bloodier deaths caused by the impact of some anti-social prat in his status symbol.

Like ThePath above I, as a socialist completely support Critical Mass as a fun, immediate way to better our lives.

Whingin "Fhingin" above obviously is unaware that many of us can't even afford a fecking car, so when he makes a special plea not to penalize the "young drivers" and accuses CM of being middle-class he's barking up the wrong exhaust pipe. Suck it down Finghin, suck it down and choke on it!

Vive la velorution!
