Reminder: Boycott Pubs day, Fri 28th February

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday February 27, 2003 12:10author by Markos - adhoc Report this post to the editors

Consumer Action against rip off Ireland

-- A reminder about this consumer action protest. The Licenced Vinters Association and the Consumer Association of Ireland are aware of this action and there have been items in the press about it --

Irish consumers are being ripped off. A report conducted last September indicates as much. Prices for alcoholic drinks are a staggering 59% (and rising) above the EU average according to a major international study. Irish pubs and nightclubs, especially those in Dublin, are churning out incredible profits. These profits, earned from the toil of the Irish consumer, can be explained by none other than total greed.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

You have a choice. You can put up with this ludicrous profiteering and continue to whinge about prices being too high, OR you can take action.

We propose a "National Boycott of Pubs/Nightclubs Day" throughout Ireland for Friday 28th/Feb/2003.

Now the Irish consumer can strike back.
And if this doesn't get the message across, we'll strike again with something even more drastic.
It will only work if everyone co-operates.

And it can be done ...

Do you really think Ray and Daithi will forsake their drinky-poohs tomorrow?!! HA.

If you look at most of the pubs in Dublin, they are run by wealthy holding companies rather than individual "hardworking" family run enterprises. Pubs in Ireland are in the main, massively profitable, charge a fortune for drink, employ rude and violent bouncers.

The Pubs in Ireland, especially in the cities, are just like the Taxi trade in Dublin before deregulation. Inadequate quantity of licenses cause the existing pubs to get bigger, louder more expensive, profitable and impersonal.

The workers would only get paid a small percentage of the overall take. I don't accept that you will be punishing the employees by refraining to drink for one night.

I really don't see how boycotting pubs, which are usually owned by hardworking folk, can make a difference. The only thing it will do is bring misery to the owner and his staff who will have thier monthly pay jeoprodized. This seems to me to be a little counter productive.

I don'y belive a general boycott will work.

As has been proven a more coordinated approach is necessary
