PROCESS AGAINST EGUNKARIA

PROCESS AGAINST EGUNKARIA

PROCESS AGAINST EGUNKARIA

On monday 24th of february all the day long, Del Olmo judge from the
"Audiencia nacional" (A special court created during the Franco period) took
declaration from the 10 arrested while closing Egunkaria. The only basque language newspaper, which spanish authorities have closed allegedly since it was related to ETA, an armed group struggling for an independent Basque Country from Spain and France.
Judge Del Olmo, took all the declarations in
the presence of an appointed lawyer, those arrested had been given no chance to
speak to their own lawyer, as the judge had ordered incommunication.

On tuesday 25th of february, at noon, Xabier Alegria, Xabier Oleaga, Joan
Mari Torrealdai and Txema Auzmendi and Iñaki Uria were jailed.
The director of Euskaldunon Egunkaria, Martxelo Otamendi has been left
free after paying a bail of 30,000 euros, as well as, Inma Gomilari with
a bail of 18,000 euros and Luis Goia and Fermin Lazkano with a 12,000
euros.

The most worrisome case has been the one of Pello
Zubiria that was taken to the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid on
Saturday. Nonetheless, that new reached the family a couple of days later who
got to know about this situtation through the press.

The family has asked to be informed about the situation of
Pello Zubiria by the press, but the hospital's doctors have just told his
wife that he wass alive, doctors did not inform about him although Pello
suffers a cronical disease which is very rare. Pello Zubiría suffers a painful
degenerative disease, the anquilosante espondilitis. For that reason he had created a http://www.izorrategi.org/zindex.htm">website in order to help his colleagues, Pello is also an active member of the global community of
patients of Espondilitis Kickas.org.
Many members of the community of those affected by this disease have
communicated their worries

Rumours said that Pello attempted suicide but in this case the answer by
the doctors didn't clear things up. They said they could not confirm nor deny
anything, the only thing they said was that he was alive. Outside rumours nobody
seems to know what is really happening to Peio Zubiria. The judge
href=" http://www.gara.net/azkenak/orriak/art53126.php">has informed to
Pello's wife that he will not raise the incomunication and that this decision
will have to wait for a medical report, but that report can take hours or days
to be issued.

In protest to this
href=" http://euskalherria.indymedia.org/eu/2003/02/4615.shtml">vigils have been called in the main basque cities on the evening of tuesday, february the
25th.
