Sinn Féin calls on Tánaiste to withdraw anti-American remarks about protesters

Sinn Féin calls on Tánaiste to withdraw anti-American remarks about protesters

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has called on people to come out in large numbers in support of a series of anti-war rallies planned for Saturday, March 1st. Speaking at an anti-war press conference today the Sinn Féin spokesperson for International Affairs also strongly criticised recent comments from the Tánaiste Mary Harney and the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell in which they had suggested that the 100,000 people who marched in Dublin two weeks ago were either anti-American or easily led.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

"After the March Bertie Ahern said that those who marched in Dublin were marching in support of the Governments position. Now we have the Tánaiste and the Minister for Justice saying that the protesters were either anti-american or easily led. What is it to be? Is the Taoiseach now going to be labelled anti-American by his colleagues in the PDs along with everybody else.

"Mary Harney and Michael McDowell's comments display an arrogance beyond belief. They are a gross insult to the Irish people and should be withdrawn. They do not represent the views of the majority of people in this state and they do not reflect the reality of the situation on the ground.

"I would urge people to come out in large numbers this Saturday in support of both the protest in Shannon and at the candle light vigil that is taking place outside the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin.

"We must not relent in bringing the pressure of public opinion to bear on this Government." ENDS

It does show the arrogance of the PDs to make comments like that.

On the other hand, though, they are telling the truth though. The SWP and the rest of the gang are anti-american. Nothing wrong with that, kids. Just admit it. Be proud of it. Wave your little copies of Stupid White Men around and shout "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more"

Ironically, I'm anti-american but pro-George Bush, so you can imagine how confused I am!

It would be fair to say that the protestors are AntiWar.

Cutting to the issue though, the word 'anti-American' conjures up all sorts of labels like nationalist
and patriotism. From outside the US, those using the term try to attach it's meaning to the idea of being
against democracy. This is simply not true.

And from within the US, the term 'anti-American' is associated with being unpatriotic.

Anyway what is patriotism, excepting the murdering of strangers on behalf of another
set of strangers.

The worst thing that could happen is that ordinary people might begin to question why people go to war,
so it is neccessary to throw out labels and generate fear and that exactly is the tactics of people who
are pro-war.

By the way, the last comment was clearly a troll.

Seeing as you are in the aul loop could you answer these questions.

Where will Adams et all be spending paddys day?

New York and Washington? And will they be loudly proclaiming their opposition to US troops in Shannon at those lovely fundraising dinners, usually packed with staunch pro America Irish Americans?

I'm just dying to know.

And Justin any chance you could lash up a transcript of what exactly they said on the 16th?

Seeing as you're so helpful n all.

is unusual. it reminds one of "un-american" which really meant "socialist".
anti-american is held to represent anti-USA.
America of course is much much bigger.
Most Americans do not have perfect teeth, they speak Spanish, they work very hard for a living and many of them really like Gloria Estafan.
I like americans. I have gone to bed with one and told everyone about it online afterwards.
I also like Anti-american Europeans. I really like how bright young Europeans are happy to say POOPOOYOU to the USA everyday in many different ways. That makes me smile a lot.
I think the bright young things should not only say POOPOOYOU:USA but also direct action anything from the USA if it is close by.

Therefore we will improve the living conditions of normal americans
AND WE ALL CAN LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
ands perhaps go back to the žanti-chinesež stance of Monty Python the formative political faction of British modern day socialism.
(Monty Python were a great bunch of activists back in the 1960s).

>Where will Adams et all be spending paddys day?

Not sure, he is going to be in the State, presumably in Washington but I don't know for certain.

>And will they be loudly proclaiming their >opposition to US troops in Shannon at those >lovely fundraising dinners, usually packed with >staunch pro America Irish Americans?

GASP! Pro-American Irish-Americans. What rare species is this? I have no idea what speeches they will be making but I know it has been made clear both publically (Letter to US Ambassador, statement by McGuinness after meeting American State Dept., endless amounts os statements on the issue) and privately in the discussions with representatives of the American government what our feelings on it are.

But frankly, why should they care? We don't need to hide our feeling on Shannon because no-one in America cares whether a party with our support is for or against. You don't hear of Bush having crisis meetings over the fact that Michael D is looking for him do you?

>And Justin any chance you could lash up a >transcript of what exactly they said on the 16th?

16th of February? Was a Sunday, can't think off-hand of any speeches or statements. Clarify what you want and let me know.

>Seeing as you're so helpful n all.

There are an incredible amount of ignorant people out there comrade, and I do my best to help them.

Stupid white men was written by an american. Anti-american people? -no. Anti-american state? Yep and bloody proud of it.
Our movement is international including millions of americans. The charge of anti-american is the last pathetic attempt to divide us. Don't use it to hide your pro-war bullshit.

113 American cities say NO to War!
by Phuq Hedd Tue, Feb 25 2003, 5:51pm
Los Angeles becomes largest city to adopt resolution against war
Dear Ms.Harney, I note with interest your vitriolic and ignorant attack on those that are opposed to the USA's assault upon Iraq. I feel it is my duty to draw to your attention that there are a huge number of these people _within_the_USA_ !!! May I suggest that a good way for you to curry favour with your US masters would be to start a House Committee for anti-American Activities?

Irish politicians are blatantly slandering, smearing and traducing those that oppose the current ongoing US assault upon the people of Iraq.

This illegal and immoral murder of innocents has been carried out from at least 1991 since when the USA and associated states with the collusion of the UN have bombed the Iraqi populace on a daily basis. They combined this "smart bombing" by "precision guided munitions" of air-raid shelters and civilian infrastructure (as well as military targets) with a campaign of mass-starvation of the Iraqi populace. This has resulted according to the UN's own estimates in the deaths of over 500,000 children.

Every criticism of this has been labelled "anti-American" abroad and "un-Patriotic" within the USA.

Perhaps it is. Perhaps the hundreds of thousands of Americans that marched twice since the beginning of the year and the 113 cities that are officially against this war are "anti-American".

If so fair play to them. Let's respect the wishes of the anti-American Americans. Let's listen to them instead of their tyrannical "leaders".

Thank you Los Angeles for showing Harney up for the big-mouth, immoral blow-hard that she is.

Sinn Fein, mainly through the efforts of right-wing Irish-Americans like Congressman Peter King, warmonger and friend of Gerry Adams, and ardent admirer of Margaret Thatcher, has been co-opted into the Anglo-American empire. They are begging Bush's poodle to be allowed back to Stormont to administer British rule. As the long drawnout I.R.A. surrender nears completion British troops released from Ireland will take place in the Iraqi massacre. Sinn Fein has lost all credibility as anti-imperialists. Leave it to those who are willing...
