Pat Cox praised the great work being done at the EU by the Irish government on Iraq war

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 17, 2003 23:18author by granny smith Report this post to the editors

Cox was very vocal in urging the EU to speak with one (pro war) voice

It seems like while the anti war movements won the arguaments and the streets on the weekend, that the Pat Cox's The John Bruton's and the Javier Solana's are winning the battle for the dirty deal behind closed doors. Cox was very bullish on the rte news at 6 tonight.

It looks like France and Germany have given in to war in a few weeks time, Blair the US and the Eastern Europeans get their way. Welcome to the new Europe. I cant wait for their new constitution for the EU, but I suppose Johnny Bruton will be making plans for therest of us and poor bastards like the Iraqis etc.

Germany's Defence Minister says Nato will act by Saturday on a Turkish request to start planning for its defence in case of a war against Iraq.

Peter Struck's statement signalled an end to a stand-off with Germany, France and Belgium.

They have been holding out against a US-backed request to draft plans to send Turkey surveillance planes, Patriot missiles and biochemical units.

Mr Struck says Germany's position is completely clear, and the issue will be settled by the weekend.

He said: "We will have a decision in the North Atlantic Council at the latest Saturday, following the discussions in the UN Security Council on Friday, which will absolutely satisfy Turkey's interests."

From today's 'Sueddeutsche Zeitung' (27 Feb 03), comes a report that the German federal government is refusing to send extra Patriot missile systems to Turkey over and above what has already been agreed ('Deutschland verweigert der Turkei zusaezliche Hilfe').

Germany originally agreed to send three of these missile systems, but now NATO is looking for nine.
