So many people on the streets of Ireland, who would have thought...
I'm sick of some people on the left describing Israel as some kind of Nazi/fascist state. This is blatently wrong!
Shoron is a war criminal and a butcher, but to classify him as a fascist is incorrect.
These people that make those type of banners should grow up and see that to classify someone as a fascist is a fairly serious accusation that shouldn't be made lightly.
I also hate the way some on the left (usually with the support of the likes of the SWP) call Israel a nazi state. Not only is in incorrect, it is also very insensitive to workers in Israel who had family killed by Hitler in the recent past.
We should stop giving quarter to anti-semetic posters, banners, chants, etc. Israel is a nation that exists and has the right to self-determination. Israel have a working class that are crucial to any settlement of the national question in the middle east.
Why cant the SWP see that there is such a thing as the Israeli working class, and not all Israeli people are reactionary anti-arab bigots.
That the Palestinian people also have a right to self determination and have the right not to be persecuted daily. You will obviously agree with me. Playing the holocaust card is very weak and it's effect will have to wear out sooner or later. Just because they were persecuted doesn't give them the right to persecute. Mostly I feel that it is not anti-semitism at work but anti-zionism. Two separate things. I'm against the war on Iraq. But at the same time I am not anti-american.

I think that when people call Israel a Nazi state that they are pointing out the irony of what the Israeli government is doing to Palestine and that the anti-semitic treatment and rejection of human rights is mirrored in the treatment of Palestinian people. I agree that it is over-the-top and incorrect but it would never have to be said if the people of Palestine weren't treated so badly and brought up in constant poverty, discrimination and imprisonment by hostile authorities....it is said to make people notice that something is going on cos soft terms would never be noticed.
Like it or lump it but those are some of the reasons.
And for the record, I think most people differentiate between the state and the people, at least the people who care in the first place...so there is no need to worry about that.
