CRACKDOWN ON DISSENT Feb 10 2003 US judge bans UN assembly.
THe majority of Irish born living are to be found in the north eastern part of the USA. They almost all live within two hours of NYC. Between now and Saturday 15th February it would be most useful if Irish people living in Ireland or Europe would contact their cousins and friends in the USA. THe United Nations building is really easy to find. It is by the river with lots of flags outside. You may remember seeing it on the news broadcast sometime. It is a really spacious complex of offices which serve the needs of the United Nations. The United Nations is an organisation that allows its members states to discuss ideas, implement policies, decided what needs to be done and by whom these are called UNsomething or UNanacroynm or Resolutions. There are several really important bits of the UN, as the United Nations is known for short. One of them is the Security Council. The Security Council decides who gets to be threatened with War so everyone else can feel secure. At the moment the Security Council is in the news, so you may have noticed it on the TV. It has a big table with twenty two sets of seats, and a big murale donated by Norway depicting nordic peace. This is described in the official literature you will get if you visit the UN buildings as being an "allegorical painting". The UN buildings have a few "allegorical paintings" another one is a very faithful copy of a famous painting by Picasso called Guernica. You wont see this if you visit the UN buildings over the next few days because the USA (a member of the UN) has asked for it to be covered. This work which for Europeans eptimosis the horror of War, was painted in tribute to those of the Basque town Guernica who were killed when the NAZI airforce acting as support to Franco dive bombed it. The USA is one of the members of the UN that is in a bit of trouble with the administration of this very select club. It hasn´t paid any of the money it owes the club for years. This is not because the USA doesnt have any money, no it is withholding its contribution beacuse it doesnt like the way the UN works. (it is a very select club, to join youhave to be a state at least. sovreign helps but any old diplomatic recognition by three or more of the security council gets you in). Now does the UN work? well it isnt the League of Nations. yet. But it does carry a certain weight, this is the place where Turkey caused Mr Krushchev to take off his little shoew and bash it upon the table. Of course most people didnt know it was Turkey then, but thats probably because the TV and indeed the protesters only spoke about Cuba. The UN to keep to the track and the point, took up the often vacous legislation left by the League of Nations before. So states that managed to get the support to join before the WW2 (you probably have seen WW2 on TV so I wont explain it for you) were seen to go on being members after. States like Ireland. lovely little Ireland. And other states like Saudi Arabia. Now Saudi Arabia began its life as a state with the French and the British messing about in 1916. And in 1922 they decided to install the Saud family. A short while later and jurisdiction of all the "holy places" of Islam passed (indeed was ceded) to the Saud family. Oh but I bore you. The UN is a symbol of a hope that has been raised for almost a century. Its enemies are many, and critics as well, think of the Jehovah Witnesses for example who wont be visiting next Saturday. But the UN is very good at doing what it does if you understand what it does. It doesnt really matter if you dont understand what it does as TV worry about that for you, but just think about Guernica and that Nordic Murale and one million people. Telephone. Fax. Email. Videoconference. Express Mail. Courier. Pigeon Courier. Hijack Radio. dont hijack planes there is a shootdown exclusion zone. tell the people of NYC New Jersey and surrouinding areas to go visit the UN buildings. Leave something that symbolises the horror of WAR. Not just this War, all war, NYC knows beter than Dublin, better than London better than Belfast what WAR means on the frontline. The day that we began to measure our NEW EUROPE our BRAVE NEW AMERICA. tell them to be couragous in the face of New Yourks media that has branded the Peace Protesters as traitors. Tell them to remember their Irish heritage and its fear of war and its wisdom in face of threat. a lot of them may have webpages like this. http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/troy/2ndward-f2.htm it has a list of people street by street lots of Irish descent from 1880. finally remember and say tell others i encourage you Public Order is not Public Safety. They are two issues and social phenomona that all to often to all too disastrous results are pursued by the same people. o as if.
