Thoughts on NYC & Hilary Clinton.
Not for the first time since 1967 activists of the global movement have been pondering the Manhatten map. This weekend a USJudge will decide if the marches are allowed to follow their predicted routes and if the assembly points are open to the people.
Hilary Clinton Senator of the USA and wife of the former President W.J. Clinton has spoken through unison.ie to Ireland.
She has echoed the worry caused to the Dublin administration by recent events at Shannon. Various writers from NYC have left sign of the debate that is raging in NYC at present.
the latest indymedia NYC news.

NYPD OK's 2/15 Anti-War Rally But Says No To March; Feeder Marches To Happen Anyway
Organizers of the Feb. 15 anti-war rally, United for Peace and Justice, have announced the NYPD has granted a permit to rally near the United Nations (First Avenue stretching north from 49th Street) beginning at noon.
Hilary Clinton has attracted all types of emotion and support over the years, from NewYorkers but here are some comments that I think appropriate to read as we wait for Feb15 to happen in NYC.
Let us go back a while to a month after September 11 2001 "the watershed of contemporary historiography".

PUBLIC RELATIONS DEBACLE AFTER SEN. HILLARY JEERED AND BOOED BY HEROES When something goes wrong, blame it on the extreme right. "How could we not know this would be the wrong forum for Hillary?!" shouted one confidante. "These are cops and firemen who listen to right-wing talkradio. They still think she killed Vince Foster, for Christ sake!"

The firefighters had by that stage issued calanders and appeared in Time magazine, they personified New York City and its stoic reaction to the terrorist event of Sept 11.
Oxydude is the last of 120 comments made by NYC internet users leaving thoughts on a thread concerning the NYC firefighters booing Hilary.
Some of the other commentators gve sign of how incongrous Hilary seemed to them as "senator".
Now Hilary today.
In an interview to be broadcast on TV3 today, Mrs Clinton said that the "stakes are very high", not just for the Middle East and the US, but "for the entire civilised world".
Commenting on the debate in Ireland about Iraq, she said: "I fully support freedom of speech. I would like greater debate. I think it's good for a democracy, and I respect Ireland tremendously."
[irish independent http://unison.ie/irish_independent/stories.php3?ca=9&si=915020&issue_id=8735
So Hilary fully supports freedom of Speech?
In her constituency which traditionally is thought of not as Ireland but New York, has she spoken of the right to democratic assembly?
Asked if opposition to the US here might hit the business relationship between both countries, she said: "I don't think it will have an effect on our doing business."
(irish independent)
Mrs Clinton said the principal reason that Iraq was considered an important place for America to focus on was because of the proliferation of weapons which could potentially end up in the hands of "rogue states like Iraq or rogue terrorist groups".
Her comments will put further pressure on the Government to openly support America in its stance against Iraq, and to continue to supply refuelling facilities at Shannon even if the US goes to war without a second UN resolution.
Yes they might do. What of these comments left on the online petition that calls on Myor Bloomberg of NYC to allow the marches. IN less than twenty four hours over two thousand more people have signed the petition read through these comments for an indication of what NYC feels..

i have deleted the postal codes from the list but of the section above only five came from outstate. two from California one from NewJersey.
Why should this interest us? Why should an anarchist hippy writer with green and pacifist concerns living in Barcelona care what happens to the NYCpeace march and not be concerned with BCN more?
Because NYC was on the 11th of September on the frontline of War. Most of those who haev signed the petition and that want to march remember the immediate aftermath of the Twin Towers attack in lower Manhatten. The grid of that city is completely familiar to them, they are thinking what do we do if we cannot cross below 59th street.
In ireland for the last major mobilisation against this War in Dublin protesters faced a similar ban. They were informed that they would not be allowed pass through Grafton Street upon their route to the U.S. embassy. They will remember that at end they did show their placards on Grafton Street.
So protest will reach lower Manhatten as well. But at what cost? The plackards that proclaimed popular Irish opposition to this War that were seen on Grafton Street behind the Gardai who had been ordered to keep protest from that street did not provoke a challenge to civil protest rights. Will the movement of people who wish to bring "PEACE" written in street wide banners to the UN assembly building provoke a challenge to civil protest rights?
I decided to ask Hilary Clinton. And so can you. Now it is worth remembering that emailing governments is a mostly a pointless thing to do, but it can sometimes make you feel better about technology.
So ask Hilary what she thinks at http://clinton.senate.gov/email_form.html
I did...
Dear Mrs Clinton,
I am an Irish Citizen resident in Barcelona. I read with interest your inspirational thoughts on "the freedom to protest" published in todays Irish Independent and to be broadcasted tonight on Irish TV. I am heartened that the warmth and interest shown by your husband and family to the Irish People has not appeared to have waivered. I have read these extracts from your interview.
"I fully support freedom of speech. I would like greater debate. I think it's good for a democracy, and I respect Ireland tremendously."
Well Mrs Clinton I do too, and I as well as supporting the right to association and expression of Irish anti-War activists I also support the right to association, expression and assembly of similar activists in the city of New York.
I wonder could your office furnish me with details of your intentions to protect these democratic rights in the future most particularly the 15th February which you will be aware is the global day of action against this most unpopular War but also afterwards.
I look forward to your reply,
yours sincerely,
Iosaf mac diarmada
now i also searched the US established media and Senate press releases, just in case I would be pestering Hilary to confirm something she had earlier said. So I trolled a while. And I am sad to say not a single phrase has been reported to have left the Hilary Clinton office in the last week that reminds one of the inspirational "freedom of speech" comments made to Ireland. Is that not strange?
Read Hilarys thoughts on "Condition Orange", this as well as being the name of a New York county is the present state of defense alertness in the USA.

now this is worth pasting in full.
February 7, 2003
Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
on Heightened State of Alert
For the second time since September 11th brought tragedy and terrorism to America, the federal government has raised the threat level to the color "orange." The announcement comes as a reminder that there are still terrorists throughout the world plotting to do us harm and that every New Yorker and American must raise their own level of awareness and vigilance. This is a time to be alert, but not alarmed.
No one responds better to our daily security than our first responders. When the federal government raises the threat level, they move into action. And I want to commend both Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg for their public statements today and for mobilizing our local law enforcement and emergency preparedness teams to protect New Yorkers.
Right now, New York City continues to suffer as a direct result of the terrorist attacks. The Administration is working with us in New York to allow nearly $1 billion to go toward closing our budget deficits, including $90 million to pay for health screenings and monitoring of the thousands of emergency response workers and volunteers who worked at Ground Zero. This is the right signal to send to the world. It shows the world that America takes care of its own, and may serve as a deterrent to future attacks. The more we prepare, the more they will realize that an attack on America is a futile effort.
isn´t that inspirational?
you will see that on TV3 today wil you not?
paragraph two refers to the firefighters who you will remember jeered Hilary on Oct 21 2001. You will note how chastened the Senator has become, maybe she took note of the "oxydude 120" comments I opened this article with. Now look at the final paragraph. I shall repeat it so no-one loses the point I am making to not only Ireland but our friends and comrades in NYC.
"This is the right signal to send to the world. It shows the world that America takes care of its own, and may serve as a deterrent to future attacks. The more we prepare, the more they will realize that an attack on America is a futile effort".
hmmmm.
to TV3 of Ireland the neutral state she said....
the "stakes are very high", not just for the Middle East and the US, but "for the entire civilised world".
hmmmm.
not quite the same tone is it?
The Irish media go on spinning Hilary´s words...
Mrs Clinton said the principal reason that Iraq was considered an important place for America to focus on was because of the proliferation of weapons which could potentially end up in the hands of "rogue states like Iraq or rogue terrorist groups".
Her comments will put further pressure on the Government to openly support America in its stance against Iraq, and to continue to supply refuelling facilities at Shannon even if the US goes to war without a second UN resolution.
hmmm.
what is the chronology of this? Did Hilary say "This is the right signal to send to the world. It shows the world that America takes care of its own, and may serve as a deterrent to future attacks. The more we prepare, the more they will realize that an attack on America is a futile effort". before "I fully support freedom of speech. I would like greater debate. I think it's good for a democracy, and I respect Ireland tremendously."
well we will never know will we?
so let us not worry about it too much.
to the business in hand getting a million people into NYC to express the global mandate against this WAR.
Now as every protester familiar with NYC knows, Central Station is well central station. It is one of four route hubs on the island of Manhatten. Stop that one working and pretty much the whole transit system from lower Manhatten and Brooklyn gets fouled up. There are many ways of getting posters in to Grafton street, and there are many ways of getting protesters across the river to the UN building.

So where will Captain Democracy come in? Indeed who is Captain Democracy? Well we now know that Captain Democracy is not a Democrat. And we have known a long time that Captain is not a Republican. No Captain D. is the brave anonymous clowning Anarchist that will defuse these days ahead. And there are many. Starting this morning NYC is beginning its Protest. The Christians "God bless ´em!" are sleeping rough (very cold) in strategic postitions around the city. So will there be more "anti-War" feeder marches for the odd veteran of US action? oh yes.

Concerned about being penned in at 49th and First Ave on May 15th? Consider joining one of the feeder marches listed below. Or post an announcment of your own in the comments section below. We will march - permit or not.
Feeder Marches (Excerpted from the UFPJ website. This is a list in formation)
Neighborhood groups, networks of folks concerned about particular issues, and various constituencies are organizing feeder marches, or planning to assemble contingents at specific locations and then move together to the assembly point on First Avenue north of 49th Street.
http://nyc.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=46204&group=webcast
but the general idea is this, very difficult to describe in text but i will try (i normally illustrate these things with chalk drawings on the ground)
This time a world city [there is only one other comparable -London] will experience concentration rather than dispersion. Before the multitudes have gathered and marched in opposite firections to do their thing. This time they will come together. On the frontline. New York City, where every resident remembers the frontline, where every resident remembers the smell of burnt death, where every citizen knows what War might bring if it is alowed to continue.
Now where will Hilary be?
well I checked her diary.
She shall not be at the UN.
if you are interested in Hilary or NY state or NYC go to http://clinton.senate.gov/about_ny.html
and you will have the chance to get watch a welcome video of Mrs Hilary Rodham Clinton.
She is a very hardworking woman I am surprised she has time to wonder about Ireland. In the last while she has been hard at work with this comittee and it has nothing to do with Ireland does it?
