Vote NO Meeting Announced for Portobello

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday February 07, 2002 14:32author by Rathmines ANV - Alliance for a No Voteauthor email sastacht at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The Rathmines branch of the Alliance for a NO Vote presents a public meeting Tuesday 12 February at 8pm at the Lower Deck in Portobello.

Next Tuesday, 12 February, people in the Rathmines and Crumlin area will have an opportunity to hear why they should vote NO in the abortion referendum on 6 March.

Labour TD Mary Freehill will explain why the Labour party refuses to participate in Mary Harney's abortion consensus, and psychiatrist Dr. Peadar O'Grady of Doctors for Choice will represent prochoice doctors. Elizabeth O'Shea of the Alliance for a No Vote will outline why we still say NO to exporting Irish abortions.

The meeting organisers hope the meeting will fire up enthusiasm for getting the message out, because the campaign needs leaflets and posters distributed.

Join the Alliance for a No Vote campaign Tuesday, 12 February at 8pm downstairs in the Lower Deck, Portobello (next to Portobello College).

Nobody said that the ANV was an SWP front. Get that through your head. In fact the SWP, for some reason, seem to have got involved in the ANV late.

What was said was that this public meeting of the "Rathmines Branch of the ANV" smelled suspiciously of the SWP. You know why it smells of the SWP? It's because that's how they often operate, temporarily pretending to be some broad organisation in order to get other people along to their meetings. Last month it could have been the Rathmines Branch of Globalise Resistance. Last year it could have been the Rathmines Branch of the Socialist Alliance (remember them?).

As for what Peadar O'Grady calls himself, I don't really care. The man will always have some brownie points in my book for being done for calling Haughey a crook.

More generally it is a serious problem that the SWP play these kind of confidence tricks. Treating people as idiots only serves to alienate them in the long run. So yes, it does matter.

Hopefully somebody can give a report of the meeting and find out just how many of those present actually were SWP. I won't hold my breath.

On the subject of abortion, yes I do care about it a great deal - to much to want to see little organisations playing games over it.

>Nobody accused the ANV of being an SWP front

yes they did:
>Smells like swizzers / Is this once again the SWP jumping on the bandwagon

>I mean Peadar O'Grady of "Doctors for choice" is rather better known as Peadar O'Grady SWP election candidate

so are you saying this person cannot speak as a doctor and a psychiatrist without giving his political affiliations? Again if you'd bothered to go to the last anv meeting you would have heard him speak from the floor and make serious contributions on abortion issues including that we should let the x case lie because ms. x is alive and well somewhere and does not deserve to have her past from 10 years ago brought up again and again every referendum (and we've had plenty of them)

So basically, if you have nothing constructive to add to the abortion issue, stay out of it; obviously its not something you take an interest in. Again, no i am not a member of swp.

Nobody accused the ANV of being an SWP front, so relax on that front.

It is pretty obvious though that this "Rathmines branch of the ANV" is just a new name for the Rathmines Branch of the SWP, like the Rathmines Branch of GR before it.

It is good that the SWP are belatedly getting involved in the ANV, but they should have the honesty to admit who they are. I mean Peadar O'Grady of "Doctors for choice" is rather better known as Peadar O'Grady SWP election candidate.

I'm delighted to hear all of that. But hey, chill, I'm on your side, it's the SWP I don't like!

where does it say swp? these are real people working on a vital issue for Irish women. I have absolutely no doubt that you are male - and of course you will never have to worry about abortion because you will never have to deal with it because you will never be pregnant.

If you had bothered to go to the last ANV meeting the speakers included Helen Keogh, chairwoman of the well woman clinic. If you doubt her credentials watch the video file:

and no, i am not a member of swp.

Is this once again the SWP jumping on the bandwagon and getting people along to a meeting believing they are getting involved in the campaign they care about or is it once again a recruiting dupe for said bandwaggers?
