Shannon Peace Camp to be Dismantled

This seems a little odd. A FGer just mailed me gloating about it.

Shannon peace camp to be dismantled

February 4, 2003

(16:37) A spokesperson for the Shannon peace camp has confirmed to RTE News that they are to dismantle the camp. The spokersperson said it will take them a day or two to dismantle all of the tents and caravans on the site.

She said that the decision had been taken because the camp had become a media circus and that they now wanted to focus attention on the other issues arising from the use of Shannon Airport by the US military.

She added that they would continue their opposition to the flights in different ways.

Aer Rianta is to seek an injunction in the High Court tomorrow restricting those at the Shannon peace camp from trespassing on airport property.

However this morning camp organisers said they would be resisting the bid to move them.

Spokesman Ed Horgan said they would be challenging Aer Rianta's claim that it owns the land on which they are camped.

Haass describes attacks as 'outrageous'

President Bush's Special envoy to the North, Richard Haass, has described the attacks on a US aircraft at Shannon as outrageous.

Following a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen, Mr Haass said he was satisfied that measures were now being taken which would allow US troops to continue using Shannon.

He said the United States valued the use of Shannon as one of the most effective ways of moving personnel and equipment around the globe.

Mr Haass stressed the importance of the use of Shannon for the build up of troops in the Gulf, and said he was satisfied that this could continue in safety thanks to measures being taken by the Irish Government.

The Ambassador also praised the Taoiseach and Minister Cowen for their diplomatic support in recent months

Jim Fahy (RTE) is quoting Tracey Ryan as part of a feature on the 5 O'Clock news saying that the camp is being closed down - unwelcome attention, media circus etc - welcomed by Aer Rianta but injunction still being sought.

Same programme is to include a report by Philip Boucher-Hayes, he's to talk about how he breached security at Shannon. Radio 1.

I hope to God this is not true.

I thought the camp was doing incredible work.

Getting incredible media attention.

Really drawing the public's attention to the horrific ways of the U.S., and for the need for there to be peace.

I simply cannot believe it if they have disbandoned the camp.

As an Irish citizen totally opposed to a US led war on Iraq I am nevertheless delighted to hear that the joke of a so called 'peace' camp at Shannon is closing down. The individuals there disgraced the name of peaceful protest, first with Dubsky then Mary Kelly then the imported bunch of strange characters who attacked the Garda and the US Navy plane. Their activity was a disgrace and totally counter productive.

They also hated any truthful reporting by the media and shouted down anybody whos views differed from them.

Lets hope that peaceful protest will now ensue and that the thugs who have infiltrated the movemnet will go elsewhere to vent their anger through violence.

It seems only ineffective letter writting, walking flower waving etc. type activities are to be allowed from now on. This does not apply to governments who may bomb and kill at will.

Direct action gets results lets keep it up.

People seem to think that damging property makes you violent, this is nonsense. Peaceful protest doesn't just mean sitting on your arse and chanting (although thats good too), it means taking any and all necessary actions, which do not harm people (and the property of noninvolved parties). However knockin the crap the of a hunk of metal doesn't harm anyone except the people about to use it kill thousands of innocent people.

I am not suprised this came from a gloating supporter of the racist FG leader Enda 'Blueshirt' Kenny. The brave Shannon protesters will not be intimidated by a brute military clampdown on freedom. I guarantee you they will not run away at the first sign of trouble theyhave proved that they are better than that. They have inspired a nation which had its head held low during the last few months of collusion with foreign armies. In factShannon would not even have been an issue without these brave women.

I am deeply saddened by the news that the camp is to be dismantled. I whole heartedly endorsed what they were doing. I wrote after the Catholic Glorious Martyers idiots undertook that act of self publicity that the peace camp would feel the backlash and it has. This is clear evidence that the anti war movement cannot sucedd unless it proceeds step by step. Direct action is very effective and will no doubt be necessary but it must be done when conditions are right. I am saddened that th actions of a few have ruined this previously sucessful protest that was winning the battle for Irish hearts and minds.
This is a terrible development and I hope Mary Kelly and the Cult of the Risen Jesus realise how counter productive their actions were. I for one will not support them in jail......

backlash? they chose to go. in any case aer rianta was taking legal actio even prior to Marys incident. your description of the CWM shows which side you are really on.
