Irish Army to protect US forces

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 03, 2003 18:42author by Brian J Goggin Report this post to the editors

According to RTE's Five Seven Live Limerick Gardai confirm that they want the Irish Army to help them to protect Shannon Airport. New readers may care to note that the Irish Army used to be involved in peace-keeping. bjg

Im fact it was on foot of fears and under direction from the US Embassy in Ballsbridge that the decision was made to send in the army.

The Gardai or the Irish public have little say in "security" matters!

I feel very emotional and deeply moved that our "armed forces" will at last be able to move away from the utterly pinko practice of peace keeping and join in the effort to ensure that even more innocent people will be murdered in Iraq. Well done Bertie and Mary, and just think how all that cheap oil will assist in our economic development. Who the hell cares about a bunch of non wasps when there is MONEY to be made from refuelling the aircraft of Dubya.

The images and the story of Irish soldiers guarding US military planes on their way to bomb Iraq, possibly without a UN resolution, are powerful and will influence and focus the protest concerning Shannon airport mightily.

Soldiers make great TV!

Standing firm in the great traditions of Irish statesmanship that have made us famous all over the world. I can see the statue of him in front of the GPO now capturing him during his famous "We want no oil if it comes across the Atlantic Ocean mixed with Iraqi blood!"

That's what leadership is all about. Did they teach him that in the LSE (or was the other liar we had as Taoiseach?).

not to facilitate the US War machine.
In keeping with our civil society Irish armed forces are not allowed open fire on civilians without prior permission from the Gardaí.
