Indymedia Ireland's First Year

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 03, 2003 14:16author by IMC Ireland Report this post to the editors

26,682 Postings later...

Indymedia Ireland is now one year old after twelve eventful months in which coverage of Garda violence at a RTS demo brought national attention and a Gardaí internal inquiry, the Ansbacher Report was published online, and article 133 became an important part of the debate on the Nice referendum.
26699_1.GIF

Among over 26,000 postings to the newswire were stories on the use of Shannon airport as a US military refueling depot, the threat to Carrickmines Castle and a variety of protests and direct actions. Many stories broken by Indymedia.ie have turned up in commercial publications.

Some of the first Indymedia stories sound familiar a year later. Stories on anti-war demonstrations at Shannon Airport and the arrest of anti-car protestors both appeared on the newswire in the first few days of Indymedia.ie.

Despite a successful first year providing an alternative, non-commercial source of news and information Indymedia.ie hasn't been without its critics, which shows it must be doing something right.

Any idea of how many different people are viewing this site?

When theres a big story we get thousands of hits a day, when it's a slow newsweek we get a few hundred.

We've excited our bandwiwth limitations on at least three weeks, we've hit 10,000 plus during article 133 debate, in the week leading up to Nice.

What's good(ish) is alot of mainstream journalists are using the site.

You can see the server statistics for indymedia.ie at http://www.indymedia.ie/WWW_REPORTS/www.html .

However remember that, because story pages are produced on the fly by the CGI script, these numbers might not be the most accurate. There are also VAST diferences (i.e. 10 times) during significant events such as the Gardaí RTS riot and the Nice Treaty referendum.

Just to say a big thanks to all those who put in the work and effort to make indymedia happen both in Ireland and abroad. In many ways it has become a focus for constructing a different world that so many people dream about.
Despite some sectarian comments and cyber arguments, the site is still very important to establishing a sense of 'community' and base for identity amongst all those of us who are continually trying to figure out and solve some of the problems of the world we live in.
once again thanks a million, keep up the good work, and be sure to give each other a pat on the back now and again.

I have convinced most of the girls in my college to check out indymedia. All the Rage Against The Machine and System of a Down fans thought it was cool, but there are too many mad little groups on it all the time, so most of my friends have stopped looking at it anymore. I still like it but if you want to reach out you will need more youth culture, more statements from cool 'political' musicans and less statements from uncool phoney all talk and no action little groups.

We'll try our best, we'll also have makeover tips, sex tips on how to guess what kind of protestor guy turns you on, horror stories such as "I left the black bloc because they wouldn't let me co-ordinate"......

Leave please, your presence is making me ill....
