Ripped from RTE

Five arrested at Shannon Airport

February 3, 2003

(10:30) Five people have been arrested at Shannon Airport.

The five, three women and two men, were detained after they gained access to a hanger and damaged a US military aircraft.

It is understood the five managed to enter the old SRS hanger at the airport where the US Navy plane, damaged in another incident last week, was being repaired.

Rte should be giving a source for this claim which they seem to be repeating bunquestioningly. Just heard a reporter on Pat Kenny implying Saturdays Walk from Bunratty was mainly attended by children. I was there, I filmed it and it was not mainly composed of children. Watch your facts rte cos some people are keeping a gfood eye on any playing with the spin on the facts.

If you run past them and in the process brush off them or knock their hat off it is "assault"

what they do to you on Dame Street or in the cells apparently is not.

I'd be interested in finding out exactly what they are claiming to constitute assault in this case.

Says one of the five is an American...
maybe she's one of those "anti-American" Americans?

That's real American spirit, holding your rulers accountable.

The actions in Shannon Airport last night will do nothing but damage to the campaign against the use of Shannon Airport. I fully support the attempts to get the US military out of Shannon and oppose any war against Iraq. However, we must be careful to maintain a support base amongst the general population. We cannot succeed without mass support. This action will isolate the campaign and play into the hands of those in the media who seek to degrade and belittle the efforts of the peace campaigners. I always suspected that some of the people at the Camp were there to get arrested regardless of how well the campaign went. This compulsion to grap the headlines and be portrayed as a martyer needs to critisicied not applauded. Direct action has a definte role to play in anti-war campaigns, but at very specific times and with great care. This was just stupid and childish.

Right now five people are being held by the state in Shannon for disarming a warplane and you react by coming on indymedia to attack them!

The Irish people don't want this war but the Irish government is permitting our involvement in it. You m ight want to restrict us to pleading with the state to stop what is doing, a lot of others are determined to take action to stop refueling. I've talked to a lot of 'ordinary' people about the direct actions to dates and actually its very easy to convince them this is legtimate, particularly if they already oppose the war.

We need 5,000 going over the fence at Shannon and dismantling planes - lets see them arrest that many!

My experience of talking to "ordinary" people as you put it has been entirely different. I have experienced nothing but hostility from people over the Mary Kelly incident and last nights events. There is not as yet any groundswell of support for this kind of action, though with time we could have cultivated it. I certainly do not want us to "plead" with the government, thats not my point at all. I accept that they are doggedly pro-American. I do however want to see the campaign reach out to the citizens of Ireland and the wider world rather than concentrating activity around a core group of zealots. I fear that the arguement, "they don't know whats in their best interests" will be used by those supporting the actions of the five last night. This is very close to fascism and shows a disregard for the ability of people to come to the right conclusions. We must win over the mass of the polution slowly and with consideration for their views, and I am confident this could be done, though last nights events have hindered this process.

"This is very close to fascism and shows a disregard for the ability of people to come to the right conclusions. "

Are you a cop or a fool? Damaging a plane is close to fascism? So what are the right conclusions, is it what you think?

Non violent diect action means not using violence against people it does not exclude damage to US Warplanes which are illegally in Shannon.

peace campaigner: However, we must be careful to maintain a support base amongst the general population. We cannot succeed without mass support. This action will isolate the campaign and play into the hands of those in the media who seek to degrade and belittle the efforts of the peace campaigners.

Get with the programme PC we HAVE MASS support 68% of people are oppossed to the war. In my place of work - most people accept Mary Kelly was fully justifeied in her actions (and they're people I've had massive political rows with in the past).
Personaly I would prefer to win large numbers to mass actions - rather then personal martyrdom
HOWEVER we have to admire the courage and conviction of these people. Its time to make a difference.
Its time to escalate the cost to the state for this "favour" the political argument is WON and well won!

PC: This was just stupid and childish.

But it once agin demonstrates that security at Shannon can be breached and easilly - now the stae once again has to go cap in hand to the American "masters" and explain itself - eventually its just going to become to expensive, too unpopular, too risky - this action and all actions at Shannon are part of that process

Andrew I've talked to a lot of 'ordinary' people about the direct actions to dates and actually its very easy to convince them this is legtimate, particularly if they already oppose the war.

Thats been my experience - in fact I've been very, very surpried by it - a lot of people are well pissed off about this !

PC: This is very close to fascism and shows a disregard for the ability of people to come to the right conclusions. We must win over the mass of the polution slowly and with consideration for their views, and I am confident this could be done, though last nights events have hindered this process.

Give us a break that's nonsense and an insult to the millions who died fighting fascism and in their death camps.
I have my own views about what type of direct action would work - I would rather it be mass, popular, democratic and not based around the deification of "tragic heros/heroines"
HOWEVER direct action is excalating the costs and bringing the message home in the best possible way.
We can win this !
Again I would salute the courage of those involved. Lets keep it up
world air ways have now pulled out - others will follow
- we can stop this
- the time for whinging about you "media profile" is over

In the Sunday Independent, Brendan O'Connor wrote yet another contemptible article attacking the peace campaigners down in Shannon.

At the end of the article, he said by the way most of us are against the war as well. There is an underlying and disgusing level of hypocrisy in his viewpoint. He will not defend the actions of needlessly robbing Iraqis of their lives and loved ones. But yet he directs his attacks at those who are campaigning against the use of Shannon. He is effectivley implying "we are against the war, but we won't do anything about it, in fact we'll turn a blind eye to our role in facilitating this war".

If you are against this war, then its just not enough to say that we are oppossed to the use of Shannon but we won't support those who are non-violently attempting to put an end to the use of Shannon as a war port.

The government are ignoring the people. We have to act to put an end to the use of Shannon, and yes we need to act in larger numbers than we have done to date. We need hundreds if not thousands breaching the fence. If the goverment won't listen to the people then the people have to act themselves.

Brennan was specifically asked on the Late Late about whether a reptition of the Mary Kelly iincident was possible and he stated, at least twice, in response to Kenny's question (Pat being worried about Al Qaeda) that such incidents would not happen again, that the airport was now secure, there were more Gardai there now etc.

I couldn't help but wonder at the time how long it would take for him to be proven wrong. Frankly, I'm impressed, three days is fast moving.

We need more people to make the use of Shannon Airport for military purposes uneconomic, insecure and untenable.

I agree with Andrew. Let's go to the fence again the next time we have a decent crowd down there. They can't arrest us all (and even if they do they can't hold us for too long due to their revolving door system)

"Peace Campaigner" is a strange person. S/he would like to stop effective action at Shannon that helps to keep my government from waging an illegal war. All my friends that are out protesting this international menacing fully support the brave Irish people that are taking these actions. We had more people out protesting in Los Angeles than ever before last Friday. We don't want the war. None of my Irish relatives I've talked to want the war. Maybe "Peace Campaigner" only talks to pro-war people, like politicians.

The media has constantly managed to portray the peace campaign and related movements as hippies and extremists.Through carefully selected photos and quotes they are not going to help us whatever attitude we take so i say fuck them and take some direct action.our media profile is never going to be what we want it and what we deserve it to be and i dont see the point in trying to change we have indymedia .as we see at this moment it provides for discussion and exchange of news. Why not cut out the slagging matches (thats is what has always divided the 'left')and try to promote this free service as a national alternative to the capitalist warmonger media.

you are not alone in your vision of a respectful protest for peace. I don't agree with vandalism, trespass or any other illegal activities no matter what the cause, do unto others as you would have done to yourself is not depending on circumstances. We can protest without disregarding the rights of others no matter how wrong we believe them to be. We lose validity when we resort to dirty tactics.
I believe that such radical acts create alarm amongst the general public, creating an impression that the campigners are 'rebels' outside of the rules that most people play by, thus isolating the majority of your average, peaceful, law abiding people some of whom will be put off joining the next protest. It is numbers that get results, but they will only grow in the right environment; an environment that is felt to be safe for all, the middle-ground.

I am the spouse of one of the persons which flies aboard the aircraft which was attacked. I have never proclaimed to be for any war. However, history, time, and people have deemed that war be NECESSARY at times. You "peace keepers" think about the Iraqi men, women, and children which have died unnecessarily. Saddam has used villiages to test his chemical and biological weapons. Look it up if you refuse to believe me. The United States may have an agenda with which you disagree. I respect that. Peace is a wonderful thing that even us "arrogant Americans" hope for everyday. Your actions represent ideaologies which have in fact created wars in the past!!! The persons responsible did not "disarm a warplane", but yet just damaged the most common airplane in the world. That's right, it was a Boeing 737, just like the airliners use. Because I know inside sources, I know that the airplane was not carrying any ammunition or troops during this attack! "Disarming a warplane?"... The United States may or may not take action against Iraq. All you (those responsible) have done was hindered a bond between two friendly nations. I won't cite to know how this could affect your economy, but it certainly could not help your cause, your people, or your nation. America with all its freedoms have certainly learned to respect the rights of all individuals including Irich men and women who disagree with a possible war. Some of you are choosing a route which will be reflected unto your entire country. There are other places to refuel. Ireland was simply the most convenient. Protest if you like, just understand the consequences of your actions... they may be bigger than you thought.

This site is crap propaganda. The only thing ye care about is being anti-system and "different". Ye don't care about the innocent Iraqis, all ye ever talk about is Bush and the oil. At a recent Shannon protest, at the head of the crowd was someone with a Cuban flag. Where does cuba come into the debate?! I dislike America as much as the next person, but stop acting so self-rightously and pretending ye actually care about Iraq. This indymedia is a load of crap. Your not independent, you have your own agenda. Like the propaganda at the May day protests. Your cameras didn't show what I saw. Its pure propaganda. In fairness the only thing the Gardaí should get in trouble for is not wearing their numbers. Well done to the Gardaí Siochana. And ye know what siochana is don't ye. That's right, what ye claim to be after, but ye weren't very peaceful on mayday were ye?

You people are idiots.

You claim that it is wrong for the U.S. to go to war with Saddam?

Go ask the people of Afghanistan if their lives are better after the U.S. attacked the Taliban.

Go tell the people in Iraq that you don't care if their families were killed by Saddams nerve agents. You just don't think there should be a war.

Go tell the families in Israel that you are sorry that Saddam pays terrorists to kill their family members but you just don't think there should be a war.

Go ask the people of Kuwait if they are glad that the U.S. defendend their country.

You people posting on this board haven't done a single thing to help these people. Yet you criticize the ones who are helping. Woe to you.

A shame.

It is a shame that the open system of publication offered by indymedia is being abused by malevolent troll posters. Thius undermines any chance of debate on the topic at hand. Congratualtions, provocateur sycophants.

Fuck.

Fuck you, debate abusers - fuck you.
