The BBC has run a story claiming UK spring temperatures are up 1.8?C. It's alarmist agitprop straight from a Green Blob press release and it doesn't check out when you look at the facts, says Chris Morrison.

Day of protest in Dublin on February 5th

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday January 29, 2003 14:36author by Paul Kinsella - Variousauthor email paulkinsella53 at yahoo dot comauthor address 53 Lorcan Grove, Santry, Dublin 9, Eireauthor phone 087-9748511 Report this post to the editors

Should be fun! - Dublin Chamber of Commerce, IBEC, ISME, the AA and the DCCBA will be blowing a fuse

There are going to be at least 3 seperate protests in Dublin city centre on Wednesday, February 5th and possibly 4 if the taxi drivers decide to go on strike that day as well!

Firstly, a 1-day nationwide strike of all construction workers will take place next Wednesday the 5th in protest at the poor standards of health and safety on many building sites across the country and the coercing of construction workers into the 'self-employed' category therby losing most social welfare benefits. As part of this 1-day strike thousands of construction workers are to march from the Garden of Remberance, Parnell Square at 11am. Then at 1:30pm thousands of students will march from Mountjoy Square in a march organised by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and supported by other students as part of the campaign against third-level fees. At 5pm schoolkids will march from the Central Bank Plaza, Dame Street to the Dail on Kildare Street to protest against a war in Iraq, organised by I think, not sure exactly of names here, perhaps somebody out there knows the right names, Youth Against War? and Schoolkids Against War? Also there is a strong possibilty that taxi drivers may stage a strike and march in protest at the lack of vetting of taxi drivers since mullie's thactherite deregulation of the taxi industry a few years ago.

Should be fun! - Dublin Chamber of Commerce, IBEC, ISME, the AA and the DCCBA will be blowing a fuse at all these protests! But anything that annoys Tom Coffey of the Dublin City Centre Business Business Association (DCCBA) and the rest of the merchant princes is fine by me.

Taxi drivers are self employed, how can they go on strike? This action is proposed by the old guard who want to go back to a reactionary situation wherby some people were the benefical owners of multiple taxi plates and in some cases employed up to 50 drivers.

Others who had just one plate usually had at least 2 people each working for them as "cosies".

There was nothing Thatcherite about the deregulation; the Thatcherite action came from the Taxi drivers. They threatened and assaulted trade union members in Dublin Corporation (Taxi section) and the Tachograph company to try & prevent new plates being issued & meters fitted.

ALL of the taxi drivers who have been convicted of sexual assault over the last few years held their licenses prior to deregulation.

There never was a taxi STRIKE in the past. What haapened was that PLate owners locked out their workers & cosies to maintain their monopoly.

There certainly should be minimum standards applied to cars & individuals allowed into the industry but these should also be applied to those who held taxi plates prior to deregulation.
If this were to occur then quite a few of the gangsters threatening to "strike" would be out of the business.

Thanks Pat. Workers Party Paul can't tell the difference between right and wrong, I suppose it's a bit like the difference between real and forged.

'The school student protest is being organised by Youth Against War.'

And you are the same people who are accusing the SWP of using fronts! Why not organise this as an IAWM activity? By just calling it under the name of the SP/SY group YAW you are reducing it to a cynical recruitment exercise.

This will inevitably lead to a smaller turnout. But the SP wont worry so long as they get a few extra members.

All our leaflets clearly state that YAW is organised by SY and does not involve dual membership.

It is not advertised as an IAWM event because the IAWM is not really directed in any way towards young people, we wish to establish a strong youth anti-war movement within the IAWM.
