More direct action against the War at Shannon

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday January 29, 2003 12:23author by Andrew Report this post to the editors

US military plane damaged on runway

RTE online is reporting the arrest of a women at Shannon who is "being questioned about damage to an American military plane there."

They claim the women has been staying at the peace camp and that "It is understood the nose of a US Navy cargo aircraft was damaged in an incident on the tarmac early this morning."

If the story is true then this is the sixth succesful Direct Action at Shannon in the last year and the second in which a US military plane was damaged. The largest of these actions back in October saw 150 people take part in breaking down part of the perimeter fence and then entering the airfield itself. A detailed report on this with photos is at http://struggle.ws/wsm/news/2002/shannonOCT.html and more reports on protests in general at Shannon are at http://struggle.ws/wsm/shannon.html

These direct actions in Ireland are part of a growing international anti-war movement that says protesting the war is not enough, we must take action against the war machine. Recent actions have seen blockades of military bases in Britain while in San Francisco up to 2,000 people attacked the INS office. More reports on these and background information on the war online at http://struggle.ws/stopthewar.html

Mary's brilliant action is being discussed and supported by the growing anti-war movement in the states.
It will take massive direct action to stop the imperial slaughter, This action points us in the right way.

U.S out of North America!

ok i´m going to go pseudo
(Hi Andrew ;-)

everyone knows i´m a fan of Deuleze and Guatarri.
great duo those.
They argued that the war apparatus as nomads is exterior yet essential to the state apparatus.

The War machine starts and runs of its own organised accord independently to the state apparatus.
Nomads lie slightly outside the state set yet hold nodal points of interaction with it.

There was once upon a time a comhaontas glas, green party discussion on ireland´s defence policies. Oh that was back in the old days when they didn´t have a TD, and were still disorgansied on anarcho-syndicalist assembly grounds. But then the TD arrived and the TV decided that was "a leader".
The Green party and it´s voters continued their path, as yet no sign of change and left behind the wisdom of their beginnings, where it was adjacent to but exterior to the state apparatus.
(very pseudo today sorry Andrew)
Anyway the defence policy was to be termed Self-Assured-Desctruction.
I think that was a jokey reference to Mutually Assured Destruction MAD the mutual assured destruction of nuclear conflict between USA and USSR.
Yes this all happened a long time ago.
USSR days.
Anyway SAD the greenie option meant that Irish people would best defend their country by destroying their own defense resources.
The thinking being that no-one would want to invade a country without airport running strips.

Now that is indeed an interesting idea the old SAD no?
I have just visited Carrer Ignatius. Named after Ignatius Loyola of Loyola who died in Rome in 1541.
There are seven recognised graffiti tags on the walls of the street, two slogans from Catalan nationalist groups, abloack sheep and a CAAT type anti-tank stencil. I saw no trace of jesuits but I suppose they have taken note of the changing function of vandalism and visual culture.

Nomads are great.
give one a home today.

The Government takes a hatchet to the Irish Constitution. The peace camp takes a hatchet to a US warplane. Congrats.
