Global peak discovery of oil hapenned in 1967. Today 4 times as much oil is produced (i.e. pumped up and burned) as is discovered.

Peak production of oil is a very important event as, after that, oil production starts declining by 1-2% per year putting a constant and incesant pressure on oil prices and thus the rest of the economy.

Peak production happenning in the US in the 80's, in the UK in the 90's and in the world outside of the Middle East in 1997. It is estimated that Middle East peak production and thus global peak production will occur within the next 6 years.

You can see an excellent lecture on this issue from oil geologist Dr. Colin Campbell at http://www.rz.tu-clausthal.de/realvideo/event/peak-oil.ram and/or get the transcript at http://energycrisis.org/de/lecture.html .

Campbell gave this lecture in December 2000. Refering to the possible consequences of peak production being reached he said...
"The United States will be in serious difficulties. There is, I think, a strong danger of some ill-considered military intervention to try to secure oil."

Quite prophetic.

Incidently, there is also an excellent look at how oil and the possible change from US$ to the Euro in its purchase could be a threat to America at http://www.feasta.org/documents/papers/oil1.htm

Those who oppose war in Iraq must work together to prevent the conflicts that will follow if we fail to tackle car dependency. We must reclaim the streets, promote walking and cycling, strengthen public transport, oppose new road construction and pay the full social cost of car use. We must argue for land-use policies that reduce the need for car travel. We need "urban villages" clustered around public transport nodes, not sprawling car-dependent conurbations. We can all play our part and we must act now.

As Michael Renner of the Worldwatch Institute put it bleakly this week, "US oil deposits are increasingly depleted, and many other non-Opec fields are beginning to run dry. The bulk of future supplies will have to come from the Gulf region."
