news report

. Image 1: It gets surreal. A couple walking small dogs emerge from the road we are being stopped from travelling down. Without any fuss they begin to walk into a restricted area. It is only when we begin laughing about how wierd this is that the Airport Police leg it after the couple, have a word with them, and turn them back. Tim speaks to them. They're always wandering around 'restricted' parts of the airport walking their dogs. Image 2: While we wait for John Gormley, the Airport police repeat that we are not allowed to film and that we cannot proceed any further. They are jumpy and uncommunicative while Tim acts like he is at home in his front room. Tim (using his knowledge of the byelaws) demands that one airport Policeman shows his warrant card. The card is produced but the guy obscures it with his hand, holds it 10 feet away from us, and very rapidly pockets it again. It is impossible to read his name or number or identify him in any way. They are obviously made nervous by their dealings with the monitors and by the presence of the media. Image 3: John Gormley returns and we head back towards the front entrance to the terminal. Someone calls out (we have just been joined by others from the camp) that troops are visible and we rush over to look. There they are overhead in the Terminal and we can clearly see them. I get my camera out and begin filming. Image 4: We keep talking and filming/recording as the Airport police approach us again. They tell me to stop filming. Image 5: I hide behind the others and continue filming the troops. John Gormley is disgusted that they are constantly trying to hinder me in using the camera and he goes back to the group of Airport Police to see how they justify stopping me filming. They quote an obscure airport bylaw. We hit the road with the job done. The 5/7 live report (if it is broadcast at all) should be on Radio 1 on Monday Jan 20 |
