Sometimes politicians have to lose to win so the other side can show its true colours. Trump is the standout example, says Prof James Allan. Had he won in 2020, we would not have had the blitz of the last four weeks.

Late Late Show Shannon Airport, Iraq Discussion

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday January 11, 2003 01:29author by Eoin Dubsky - Refueling Peace Report this post to the editors

Well done to everyone!!

Peace campaigners from the Irish Anti-war Movement, the Shannon Airport Peace Camp, PANA, Refueling Peace, and Americans in Ireland against War were on Pat Kenny's "The Late Late Show" this evening. Pat helped keep the debate going, as the "pro-war" side was only represented by an Israeli, an American, and a phone-in.

Hats off to everyone involved!

Peace!

See you soon

I was under the impression that the author of the above was not allowed, because of his bail conditions, to vist Shannon airport. I hope the authorities have taken note of his plans.

Welcome to the SWP Shannon Peace Camp!

Yup hats off to everyone indeed, and especially those who have committed so much of their time to the Shannon Peace Camp and endured the elements. For once the balance of media biasm shifted in our favour as it was a farily one sided argument. But it only reflects the reality of the situation in that there are little if none "pro" war groups, where as there are countless anti-war groupings.

It just shows that media coverage will be got on these and so many other issues if a big enuf fuss is kicked up over something and constant efforts are made by all to bring things to the publics attention.

With this confidence all and every type of media, from local to national, from raido station to tv station should be "attacked" strategically and consistently in order to get media coverage of this and all other left wing / humanitarian issues.

Congratulation all involved, Tim, Kat, Mary & Ed. At last your getting the coverage you all deserve, all those long nights at Shannon are paying off. Not much negative feedback from the audience except for the the Israeli!, which hopefully reflects national opinion. Now the push is to get everybody down to Shannon and Dublin in Feb.

Good clear precise performance from SWP panelists.

How much of their time have Richard & Aoife committed to the Shannon Peace Camp?

I think Richard and Aoife (Irish Anti-war Movement and SWP) and everyone else spoke very well. It was a great show of solidarity - they plugged the peace camp as soon as they could and did a shoutout for help/money/people too. Mary Kelly spoke brilliantly too, bring the issue back to "people level" from the geo-politics which dominated the discussion.

Great show lads. Well done to all who spoke both panelists and those in the audience. Should be a great help in trying to mobilise for next Sat and Feb. See you all there!

great show last night.

It was nice to see a good debate on the subject.

I was in a dublin breakfast shop this morning and people were talking about it.

At least in that small microcosm, the show's debate had a positive effect.

thank you to everyone who has supported the shannon peace camp and the anti war movement in general. it was not an easy task to sit and listen and to respond pats insistance in keeping the debate with the internationl high politics with profound statements that deviated from the real issues. despite introducing the slot from an irish context he had no intention of keeping the line of conversation within that focus. it was up to us to force the issue that the Irish Government, without the consent of the irish people, have blood on their hands by facilitating the US military use of shannon warport, in an a war cynicaly justified by the events of semptember 11th. plain and simple!
incidently the peace camp is not an SWP camp, it is however a place for one and all to come and/or support for the reasons above.

While Richie and Aoife did really well on the panel, especially Aoifes comments about the invoice at the end which put Pat back in his seat it think it was really sloppy work on the part of the Late Late show researchers to have two members of th SWP/IAWM (shit that sounds like Sinn Fein/IRA) as main speakers especially when all the publicity generated over the last week was due to the people at the Shannon Peace camp. Two from the peace camp should have been on the panel. Mary Kelly & Tim Hourigan should have been named by Pat and been well known to him. I was not impressed. Ok the demo will be huge this Saturday and thats a plus but the paper selling, recruitment & attitude of th SWP will no doubt alienate all nuetrals who turn up. I guess its up to the rest of us not to let this happen.

who cares if they are SWP, they did a great job.

stop attacking comrades and fight the real enemy.

this needs to be a broad movement.

If they don't care they could have let someone from the camp to be on the panel.

well done richard & aoife. now, to disarm any cynics, iawm could announce that they will allow GG speakers at both the shannon & dublin demos.
