Jump To Comment: 1The crisis in Chile in '73 began in a similar way - the ruling class trying thru lockouts/strikes/the media etc to bring down Allende. After time and with encouragement in the way of 'military advisers' from USA, Pinochet-the General was invited in by Allende to his cabinet. As the crisis deepened the military had 2 choices - break ranks and defend the left or push through the US's agenda. The vacillation of Allende led to the latter.
However in Venezuela although Chavez is vacillating, on the ground the poor and working class are more combatitive than in Chile - which is why the army will not take sides at the moment. Give it weeks maybe months and the pressure towards officer ranks will be to back the ruling class. However on the rank and file the pressure is to back the workers.
