Padraic

Just thinking that for those of us not in Dublin that time on a Sunday is not the best - perhaps earlier or on Sat? Just if people needed to be places on Mon morning ...getting trains/buses home? Maybe this not a problem. Just thought I'd mention it though.
Happy New Year!

whos organising this? are the groups named sponsoring it?

i'm involved in acouple of em & this is the first i've heard of it.

when & where was it decided to hold this event at a time which efectively excludes people from outside dublin?

for that matter where & when was it decided to organise this event?

the last thing we need in libertarian/independent circles is people acting in a trot like manner; calling a meeting in the name of organisations who have not been consulted.

author by Raypublication date Fri Jan 03, 2003 15:50author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The meeting isn't called in the name of any of those organisations, but says that some of the people who've been involved in them will be there.

author by pat cpublication date Fri Jan 03, 2003 16:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

this is just the sort of thing which leads to mistrust. WHICH members of those organisations will be there? WHICH members agreed to the calling of the meeting?

if it had been discused among the remnants of lan or GG dublin anti war or anti bin charges then people might have had opinions as to the bset time & structure for such a meeting.

i'd just like to know is this meeting called by one person (nothing wrong with that, it should be just made clear) or is it in some way representative of the groups named?

if the swp did something like this they would certainly come under attack.

author by Raypublication date Fri Jan 03, 2003 16:36author address author phone Report this post to the editors

(based on my guess who Padraic is)
it was called by a bunch of people who know each other, and who were involved in some of the campaigns mentioned, but its in no way representative of the campaigns. While the original post might not have been absolutely clear, it never looked to me like it was called by any of the campaigns. As to why it wasn't discussed at a LAN/gg/bin charges meeting - I don't know, when was the last LAN/gg meeting? And which bin charges meeting would be appropriate?
I find it hard to compare with similar SWP activities, because the SWP would have done things very differently, so I can't really answer your hypothetical...

author by pat cpublication date Fri Jan 03, 2003 17:26author address author phone Report this post to the editors

i'm all for spontaneous action. if a bunch of friends want to organise a meeting, them more power to them. but then it should be advertised as such.

they could have advertised this meeting to gg anti war, (it was meeting in dublin at least ); they could have asked someone from lan to send it out on the lan lists. they could at least have contacted organisations & individuals involved in the anti bin charges campaign.

all i'm doing is daring to ask who is organising the meeting. and why didn't they contact the groups named in the posting?

it wouldn't be acceptable for trotskyists to carry on like this; if the sp or the swp had done this then you would have jumped on them.

equally it would be better if libertarians contacted organisations if they are going to set up a meeting to discuss/critique the activities of those campaigns.

author by Raypublication date Fri Jan 03, 2003 18:20author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Whatever the meeting is, the notice could have done with being more detailed, and being more widely publicised. But I don't think it an attempt to take credit for the work of the listed campaigns, or to set up a front group to distract from an existing campaign, so I don't see any reason to call it 'Trot-like', or compare it to the SWP. Anyway, I don't see why you think I'm getting 'snippy', or why you think it takes 'daring' to ask who's involved in the meeting, or why you think its 'Trot-like' for that matter, so I don't see any point in continuing this...
