Over 80% of N.I population say crucify joy/death riders

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday December 16, 2002 00:23author by careful now Report this post to the editors

Results of a Poll taken by the Sunday People newspaper reveal over 80% of the public in Northern Ireland support the crucifiction of joyriders.

Over 80% of the Northern Irish public voted in favour of crucifying joyriders, compared to the 11% who disagreed with crucifying joyriders. The Poll was taken after the crucification of Henry McCartan, but the shock results indicated that far from sympathising with reckless joy/deathriding scum, there was cross community support for the punishment dished out to Harry McCartan. Harry was crucified after a campaign run by the Sunday people, highlighted the plight of relatives breaved through car crime, working class mothers, sons, and children mowed down by reckless joyriders and the recent death of teenager Debbie McComb who was knocked down by joyriders. For compulsive car theives joyriding is an addiction that is hard to break. At one point during the late 70's and early 80's joyriding was actively encouraged by community activists, in order to waste the time and resources of the security forces. Whole working class communities supported and protected responsible car thieves and joyriders. You cannot stop joyriding but i feel we can encourage joyriders to joyride responsibly, to joyride politically, to aim vehicles at security force members, instead of members of their own working class communities, to steal cars from rich areas like the Malone/Stranmillis/Bangor, to joyride in these areas, to use these snobby areas as race tracks instead of putting working class peoples lives at risk by driving recklessly in working class areas. I do not support the crucification of joyriders, but i understand the frustration and the knee jerk reaction of our working class communities to the probelm of joyriding. We should not do as middle class meely mouthed social workers do, pander to joyriders, instead we should encourage joyriders to use the exclusive highways of the rich and the privileged and watch how fast the pigs crack down and tackle joyriders if joyriders used these areas.

Reckless joyriding can also be combatted by teaching wee kids to drive cars, by giving wee kids proper driving lessons. Computer games which encourage young people to drive irresponsibly and recklessly should be banned. Many deaths occur during pig pursuit of joyriders, pigs should curtail reckless pursuits of joyriders. Pigs seem to care more about the rich bastards stolen car than they do about public safety.

It's hard to take the results of a poll like this at face value.
I think it is important that we question these 'results' and how
people came up with them. This is the sort of stuff that molds
public opinion.

1) How many people were polled?
2) Was the sample adjusted for male/female ratio?
3) Did the sample represent the age profile of the population?
4) What was the class profile of those polled? Was it representative?
5) Selecting readers of Sunday People introduces it's own bias. In my
view it is a right-wing paper. Then surely those buying it were bound
to predominately have right wing views. Therefore did the poll
reflect the political profile of the whole population in NI?
6) How was the poll conducted. Did it come straight after horrific
stories about joy-riding?

7) What were the actual questions asked? etc etc

The way questions are posed often frame the debate. So should joy-riders
be crucified suggests Yes/No and thereby implies; -Should we use this
method to solve the crisis or not?

Solving joy-riding is not going to be solved solely by such methods. It
is a much wider social problem and isolating symptoms like this does
nothing to help. It is ultimately connected to all the wider problems
in society. You know you could be voting to crucify your own son!
