category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday December 04, 2002 13:55author by kahootz Report this post to the editors

Would You Believe 'My Father's Land' 22:10, RTE 1, Thursday 5 December 2002

Salah Afifi made the headlines when he was arrested this summer, imprisoned for 7 days and deported by the Israeli Authorities for taking part in a peaceful protest march in a small town near Nablus.

It was Salah's first time to visit Palestine, for him the journey to the West Bank was part of a quest for truth and for his roots. Salah grew up in Portmarnock on Dublin's Northside - Half Palestinian but wholly Irish. This week's Would You Believe hears Salah's story - a very personal insight into his discovery of his Palestinian inheritance.

Do thāinig bean an leasa

D^fhanas im ōinsdeach ag fźachaint uirthi
faid a bhearraigh sī na brainsī

==============================The fairy woman canme with a Black & Decker. She cut down my tree. I watched her like fool cut the branches one by one.

.....lots of it......
.....maith an cailīn...

Thit a ^tōin as mo bholg

nō leacadar sna baothāin
līon taom anbhainne isteach orm
a dhein chomh lag san mź
gurb ar źigin a bhī ardū na mźire ionam
as san go ceann trī lā.

=======the bottom fell out of my stomach and as if I got a good kick or a punch in the guts a weakness came over me that made me so feeble I couldn^t lift a finger for three whole days.

Murab ionann is an crann
a dh^fan ann, slān.

=Unlike the tree
which happily, heathily grew away.

This programme will be seriously misleading, there are no Palestinians, Golda Meir said so. How do we even know that this guy is really a Palestinian?
