Well argued.

I felt you illustrated your point cohesively. Got me stumped with that one. And doubtless you have the Americans on the run all over Asia, Africa, and the middle East.

Definitely not a waste of my time. And it fits squarely under the banner of journalism too. News as well. Great. Super. I look forward greatly to your next one not-quite-a-sentence disquisition.

is that a hideously bungled quote, cobbled together in a headline which does not make grammatical sense, grounded in an amphetamine scale paranoia, is news?

I know very well how to read my news, you cancerous and incomprehensible carbuncle on the consciousness of current affairs. And what you wrote was babbling gibberish. Gibberish man.

And that was damn well not news. Christ, tabloid headlines have greater editorial rigour than the utter meaninglessness you foisted upon this site in the name of jornalism. Mother of babbling god man. You're an imbecile.

Below is the dictionary definition of news, you paranoid and addled little freak.

Pronunciation: 'nüz, 'nyüz
Function: noun plural but singular in construction
Usage: often attributive
Date: 15th century
1 a : a report of recent events b : previously unknown information
2 a : material reported in a newspaper or news periodical or on a newscast b : matter that is newsworthy

author by Abraham Abulafiapublication date Mon Nov 25, 2002 01:27author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Now, we are beginning to see some journalism.

Expansion, evidence, suggestion, discussion.

The further points seem to justify my original post.

A one, partial sentence fragment, does not a news story make. A ream of links, tied together by a central theme, does a news story make.

It takes a peculiar brand of imbecile to post the line

"no nation nor state shall raise
without prior permission of Washington tax, militia or levy"

and call it news.

It takes another, entirely different, but equally peculiar brand of imbecile to take issue with somes complaint that the above quote does not constitute news.

The type of imbecile who would take my complaint, that a one sentence fragment does not constitute news, and spin that out into a particular political position on the part of the author, is the type of imbecile who makes a slim volume of my vocabulary.

Iossaf - thank you kindly for the links. You have aptly demonstrated the difference between an article that attempts to be informative, and the random babblings of a sub sun idiot. I will not comment on the links, their veracity, or their contribution to an overall understanding of the situation. To do so adequately would take several hours of research.

Omar. You are, indeed, an imbecile. Somehow, you have managed to take a specific comment on the absolute and indisputable paucity of material in the original comment, which only a drug addled chimp in the firm grip of an absinthe binge could mistake for news, and somehow construct of it a worldview diametrically opposed to your own. Not to say I don't appreciate the supplementary information, such as it is, that you supply. I do. And that was exactly my point.

News requires the imparting of information. Information was not, heretofore imparted. Ha#ence the comments.

author by Abraham Abulafiapublication date Mon Nov 25, 2002 01:40author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Why in the name of all that is reasonably sane do people seem to think I have theis issue about China? I have never mentioned China at all, previously, in this discussion. Anyone who thinks I have, and the above posts most certainly think so, must be incontrovertably contextually dyslexic.

The inability to relate a discussion with what was actually said is a fundamental handicap to the proseccution of journalism.

It would be like, Omar, if I insisted suddenly, that you had a pathological hatred of the colour blue.

It is non sequitiur practised as rhetorical art. Repeat after me Omar, context, context, context.

I quote

"we ARE going to talk about CHINA."

Great. No one is freaking stopping you Omar. Its a lot better than quoting a one line quote.

"now do you wish to continue discussing
Abraham, SHeik Emir Osama Yussef Haj Bin Laden citizen (renounced 2001) of Yemen, heir to 300,000,000$ first described by the Jordanian secret service as a terrorist fundraiser and backer in 1995 or are you into the NEWS?"

What? I never even brought the fucker up in the first place. Goddammit man. You seem to think I have a problem with you discussing things. I FREAKING DON'T. That was my goddamn point to begin with. My god man. Discussion is great. Discussion is fucking wionderful. So's journalism. But the line "no nation nor state shall raise
without prior permission of Washington tax, militia or levy"

qualifies as neither.

Sheesh. You goddamn lefties are sooo uptight.

Anyway, to log off for the mo, I'll give your links a cursory view - now that there are links - and maybe I'll discuss them - now that there is something to freaking discuss.

And yes, Omar. You will see a lot more of me. Why?

Because I'm a practising journalist. I read a bare minimum of 5 international newspapers per day, and at least the same amount of news magazines and digests. I've done so for the past three years. I've done comparative articles between media treatments across the Arab and Western world.

The other reason you'll see a lot more of me Omar?

Because drivel like the originating post has no place on a newswire.

author by omar hassempublication date Mon Nov 25, 2002 12:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

you are definitely playing your part as I had hoped someone would.
now as a practising journalist you will be aware of the "flying a kite technique", by which a "newsless" item is placed to solicit response.
You will also be aware that neither headlines nor introductory texts in journalese are subject to normal gramatical rules.
Simple Present Tense is often used to convey a sense of urgency.

and I don´t have a double doctorate but neither do you, but three of my peer group who have been attempting to raise some of the above issues do.

A sunday afternoon meaningless post was left to solicit a response intiatate a thread.
The Thread was based on the idea that the current global situation is based on a percieved "PAX AMERICANA" such as previous global crises have been preceded by other nations´ "PAX" [to be correct "PACEM".
You have weighed in with accusations of time wasting yet it would have taken a trained journalist less than one minute to read the post.

hmmm, I always kites being flown.
and have been watching this develop over the last 24hours. I´ve also been watching a fuel tanker in flames float over 15km NNE in Chinese waters towards a nuclear power station. I love latin as my fans will know, and I love cryptic puzzle clues as well, and I agree with Abraham Abulafia about newsworthy articles, there are lots of newsless posts on the wire.
Abraham could you direct the irish readers to your work on relations between the "WEST" and "the muslim world"?
Are they based in the Maghreb or Levant?
do you have any thoughts on the muslim majority states of Western China, which border Afghanistan?

I do, ever since spending a weekend discussing the Tashkent oil pipeline expansion project.
Now as one who reads many international newspapers and contributes to many transnational discussion forums, and different other types of media, I would like to welcome Abraham to indymedia Ireland.
I really like your "punchy" drug slang style, surprising for a "arab" specialist journalist. I´ve only encountered one before in Paris. Perhaps you know each other?

I recognised the "pax americana" quote for what it was, a rendition of the declaration of independence by the 13 colonies. I thought oh what´s going to follow here.

Then emerged Omar Hassem (he of the doctorates six honorary) OMAR!!! it´s been ages, where have you been hanging out?

I thought of the above, hmmm
newsless or ----very quickly written.
so I anaylised it [I love the analysis Abraham]
and I thought hmmm. we are at DEFCON2, for the info of those who do not know what that means, it means we are one level away from full scale WAR.
We have been at DEFCON2 since Sept 11 2001.
Thus we don´t have a "pax americana".
But no nation state is challenging the presumption on which all international treaties are operating.
No nation state has the "power" to challenge "pax americana" or does it?
I quite agree with "Omar Hassam" and have always since we first met. Dismissing him as a drug addled fiend might be a bit hasty on your part, Abraham.
Can we have those links to your work?
and incidently "pax americana" has been challenged by the Chinese CP congress, i would refer "a fellow professional" to read the Shanghai Star of the last two weeks for their slightly biased reporting on Chinese entry to a world economic status quo based on levy, militia and tax raised only with previous consent by ....Washington.
now $=€ you have been very quite, is that what you meant?
$=€is not a name but a semiotic idea, and one I and many others have used, so I understandably wuold like to know before I get the blame.

Omar.

To quote..

"you are definitely playing your part as I had hoped someone would."

However you may try to paint yourself as a svengali, or an arch, and supremely intelligent manipulator, the facts of the matter, and your own peculiar, asynchronous argumentative style belie this. The fact that you posted your first comment nine hours after the original post also goes someone to undermining this.

To quote again

"You will also be aware that neither headlines nor introductory texts in journalese are subject to normal gramatical rules."

Headlines necessitate explanatory text. I presume you are acquainted with this practice Omar. Its called news. Its how most of us chhose to write. And a non grammatical headline, with no other reference, no comment, and no explanation, still does not constitute news. You idiot.

"and I don´t have a double doctorate but neither do you"

how the fuck do you know I don't have a double doctorate? Do you know who the hell I am? No. Is it indicative of your journalistic integrity that you make assumptions without a shred of evidence? Omar. Basic practice in journalism indicates that you check your facts before you go to print.

To quote you again

"A sunday afternoon meaningless post was left to solicit a response intiatate a thread."

Excellent. You seem finally to have gotten my point. Meaningless. Excellent Omar. Its a stiff learning curve, I know, but I have confidence you'll get the hang of it. And the original post didn't initiate a thread. I did. ME. Not you, Omar. Not the poster. ME. You replied some nine hours after the original post. Your celerity of response, it seems, is matched only by your grasp of logic. Your words also seem pertinent to my other point. A headline constituted, by vacuum of context, entirely of gibberish, does not constitute news. This has been my sole point all along. Finally, you seem to agree. And this is a ...wait for it Omar....I'll even capitalise it for you...a NEWSwire. NEWSwire. It even says so Omar, all over the goddamn site.

So Omar. You are an idiot. An imbecile of macrocosmic proportions. Not because of your political stance - which I never took issue with, you addled little simian, and which you started barking about with all the relevance of a catholic priest at a child welfare conference - but because of your inability to interface with the arguments presented to you. Is this a general problem you have with the rest of reality, or is it a disorder which manifests merely online?

Iossaf...

thank you again, for your reply.

Regarding "directing my readers", this has nothing whatsoever to do with my whole argument, which was qute simple really. The original post was not news, and it was not journalism. I fail to see how my views, experience, or work on the Middle East has any nearing on this. I really have no idea why you are even asking me. Never once did I mention any political stance of mine.

The argument is not about politics. It is about journalism. Plain and simple. Thats all it ever was about. Both you, and Omar seemed unable to keep politics out of it, which has nothing to do with me, or my point. And I have, in the context of my own argument, no reason to discuss politics with you. It has no bearing of the journalistic integrity of the original post. And no bearing on what I was talking about. None.

Thanks for the compliments, Iosaf, and despite the above paragraphs, I greatly look forward to arguing both with, and against you.

A final word to Omar.

Are we clear here Omar? Or do you wish to embarass yourself further? I'm happy to continue arguing with you. But try to keep to the subject, dearie. Watch out for the contextual dyslexia, there Omar.

I asked for redirection to other articles as I think that a trained journalist who has quite properly shot down a newsless article on the newswire [which let´s be honest is filled with non-news stuff, and reprints from newspapers], because I think a serious debate of overlap of muslim nations in several spheres of influence is needed in indymedia ireland [a neutral registered website].
I was hoping you could explain to the readers the plight of muslims in Western China, and maybe explain the connections between "Pax americana" and "Pax Xino" [strange terminology?!].
I think that some re-direction might help, which newspapers / media do you write for?
and I´ve checked the long list of "china-paranoia" stuff, some old stuff but it´s still relevant, and some really weird "paranoia" stuff, honestly "Omar Hassam / €=$" to suggest that China might have had a role to play in Sept. 11 is not a new, nor is it new to offer evidence of possible motive, what would be new, and welcome to me, and I suppose Abraham, would be thoughts on how that future "covert conflict" may effect "Western / Muslim" relations.
so we wait on Omar / $=€
and there´s another list being verified on US peace/war dates.
loads of dross for this week I reckon maybe we´ll find some gold?

You may well tun out to be an interesting human being. Looking for my thoughts on Chung Kuo? I'm no expert on the East, my articles were mainly on media treatment, and mainly for fortnight magazine. Not available on line.

At the mo, I'm mashing together my current thoughts, and catching up on my reading, re history and politics, in an effort to inform my understanding of both the relevant situations and the reportage thereof. I've got three books currently on the go, one long term history, and two documenting the historical and political evolution of the region...

Re China, a brief resume of the chronology of the most favoured trading status in the US, from the time of early Clinton onwards, cross-referenced with the various economic and diplomatic realtions should tell anyone all the need to know about US-Sino relations.

To answer your question bluntly, when I feel I have enough information, expertise, and evidence, I'll post my articles. At the moment, I have merely intuition, gut feeling, and the barest of facts upon which to base my analysis. And having read other of your comments, I may well not yet have enough of a grip on the situation to present the article that you may well deserve.

Hi Abraham!
just a little while back I answered an article posted by a "captain america" on an Islamic issue.
it was a disgusting but well written piece.
I added a link to the muslim community in Ireland.
I deed indeed receive instruction from a Suffi iman do read and write a little arabic but am not muslim. I do not hold one of the "world faiths" considering such a little inappropriate for myself.
I thought as writing that comment that indymedia ireland lacked a muslim voice. I am presuming from your name and short bio-pic of yourself that you´re muslim.
I was of coures referring to Chung Ko but also the six western provinces of China including Tibet. And the general area of Afghanistan (borderlands), north eastern Pakistan, and the "former soviet" stan republics.
I recall speaking "at length" to a refugee from that area in the closing years of the last century. And if this silly stupidity is over above, I would welcome any of your thoughts on this area. My email is above. But let´s agree not to spam each other.

And "$=€" and "Omar Hassem"
I and any of those who "know who they are" instantly recognise the name "omar hassem" and know its significance.
I had not thought to see it yet.
and of course I´ve and i suppose many others have heard the expression "panda bear´s been mating" because I wrote the line, what connection it has to do with Omar Hassem and China I don´t think you managed to make sufficiently clear.

Spam would most certainly not be an issue. Ill tuck away your email for future reference. If you want my input on a story that is online, point me to it, and I will with pleasure attempt to contribute anything I can.

BTW...no, I am not Muslim - but I thought the original Abulafia was a Jewish mytic - 10th century Spain?

i´ll come back to it with a suggestion within 6 days.
It delights me to be caught out on cabalistic mystics of medieval Spain, a very interesting period of european history for me.

African Islamic Professor Condemns Terrorism, Praises Muslim Charitable Organizations
Professor Doctor Abdallah Dumbuya, a Gambian scholar with a double Doctorate degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Sciences, has strongly condemned organisations and groups using Islam as a justification for terrorism and violence.

The Islamic intellectual stated that in Islam "to kill innocent people is haram" [forbidden].

"The super powers should try by all means to stop terrorism immediately," the scholar said, asserting that any terrorist captured should be killed or jailed for life. "If they kill innocent people, they should be killed, if they do not kill but threaten with violence, they should be jailed for up to twenty years or more," he said.

According to Professor Dumbuya, both the Sharia (Islamic law) and Western law agree on the legalities involved in meting out punishment to perpetrators of terrorism.

Dumbuya intimated that although there is more media attention generated by so-called Muslim terrorists, there has been other development oriented Islamic philanthropists who have contributed to mankind. In a bid to give a contrast to Osama Bin Laden's personality he mentioned Sheikh Adina Basalama a Saudi Arabian Muslim cleric whom, he said, is not into terrorism but the development of poor people around the world. "Sheikh Basalama has helped to build schools and mosques in several countries, he has helped spread positive Islamic education to the world community," the professor explained.

Professor Dumbuya also mentioned Salem Bashanfer whom he said is another Saudi cleric very active in helping needy Muslims and underprivileged communities. He also mentioned Mohammed Hassem Sheikh Asheem Barakat and Abdallah Omar Ba Nkhar all Saudi clerics helping needy Muslims "not with guns, or violence."

On the question of State House Imam Fatty's statement that the US government should be blamed for the attack because of their policies, Professor Dumbuya refused to comment, claiming that only "half educated Muslims will support terrorism."

"I am a doctorate, I do not consider half educated people who support terrorism in Islam because they do not know the Quran or the hadith," he said.

He advised Gambians and non-Gambians to be "careful about terrorism," saying that people "who support terrorism will not get any help from the outside world." He called on The Gambia Government to make Islamic knowledge a subject in all the schools in The Gambia, and that Islamic teachers should be given priority in the Department of Education, pointing out that The Gambia is ninety-nine percent Islam.

He called on privileged Muslims to help Imams and Islamic teachers because "they are leading prayers without salary."

"I am asking the people to recognise the dignity of Imams, they are great people in Islam," he appealed.

Profession Dumbuya said that Imams have no other work except leading the Muslim communities "so they should be helped."

He called on schools to encourage their pupils to speak more English instead of vernacular, which he says will not be good for their education." "I met over hundred students of St. Augustine's and Gambia High School recently and they were all speaking vernacular (local languages). I asked them if they are taught in vernacular," Dumbuya said.

He said he contacted a teacher who told him students from Banjul and the Kombos usually fail English objective examinations while their counterparts in the Provinces are known for doing very well in the subject.

Professor Dumbuya commended Citizen FM radio station for their objective reporting, and called on international donor agencies to help the station establish a private television station in The Gambia.

The Islamic scholar roundly condemned the practice of calling the Azzan (early morning prayers) 4 O'clock at night, saying that it is unislamic.

"It is haram to make the Azzan at 4 O'clock when prayers take place at 6 O'clock." "In Islam, the first call should be 45 to 50 minutes before the prayers, and the call should only be twice," he said. He advised Muslims to know that the Azzan is only made two times and it should not be made several times as is the practice. He also condemned the practice of radio stations playing the early morning call repeatedly, as well as playing recordings on amplified speakers.

Professor Dumbuya has an International Doctorate in International Islamic Science, in the High Institute of Religion Principles, Ezzitouna Faculty of Theology, University of Tunis. He also holds another Doctorate degree in Jurisprudence and Legal Policy, and the Provisions of Muslim Law Concerning Children. He has spent up to twenty-one years in his academic pursuit in Tunisia and has undertaken numerous researches in the Arab world. He also works with an international Islamic charitable organisation as adviser.

According to the Professor, his charitable organisation will help The Gambia. "We intend to do a lot of help for Gambia, we have great intentions," he promised. Professor Dumbuya is presently here in The Gambia on a short leave.
