 Time to get active against the war - Things to do in Dublin Shut Shannon Warport: Coming Dublin Events Public meeting, October 4th, 7:30pm Liberty Hall (anti-war activists and eye-witness account from Iraq) March to US embassy, Assemble 2pm Central Bank, December 7th National Protest, Shannon Airport, 2pm December 8th The Western war machine, driven by Bush and Blair, is gearing up for another war against a third-world regime with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of innocent Iraqis facing imminent, violent death. The coming war may well only last a few weeks as another country is obliterated by the awesome might of the US military. Although the war is being driven by the US and British governments, it relies upon the assistance of governments all over the world, who will supply troops, air bases, logistical support and funding to the war effort. The Irish government has played their If we want to avoid the mass slaughter that the war will bring, the time to act is now! Although kicking the US troops out of Shannon is not going to stop the war, it will have some effect. The US would have to transfer their flights to other bases which would be more expensive and would allow them to transport less military equipment on each trans-atlantic flight. What's more, if a mass popular movement could force the Irish government to stop the US military from using our airports, the morale effect on the rest of the world would be tremendous. If Ireland can kick the yankee troops out, then anything is possible! There have been three major protests at Shannon The Grassroots Gathering, an island-wide network of grassroots activists, has called a protest at Shannon airport for Sunday December 8th, beginning at 2pm. The Dublin organising group will be arranging buses to bring people to and from Shannon airport. The buses will leave at 9am from Liberty Hall (Eden quay) and will cost 13 euros return. 3. wait to be accepted by the moderator.
4. find time to go back and do it later.
A place that might work for the previous poster would be geocities. Pages are accessible without any of Yahoo's information gathering. Also angelfire.

A uniformed Garda came into NCI (located in the IFSC) with a print-out of this article and demanded to talk to the NCI students union. I couldn't hear what was being said, but does anyone know what this is about? Has this happened in other colleges?

And what about the rights of people who may or may not agree with you, but have booked tickets to fly out of Shannon? Any chance their rights might be respected?

No one is maliciously targetting people who have tickets to travel. They just have to realise that "WE APLOGISE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE BUT THERE IS A WAR ON"
and the cops can investigate all they like, it's intimidation that we object to.

ye were interfering with the running of an international airport, by hassling and delaying regular passengers just to be the annoying nuisances that ye are.. obviously ye can see by the 'big protest' that interest in ye has diminished greatly.. no body gives a stuff about ye any more,, get back up the tree's.
I have a problem with the overt aggression evident in this discussion group, it's not constructive and is contrary to the peaceful motives most people have for attending protests or trying to do something about the fact that pretty soon we will be somehow complicit in a war which we want to play no part in.
I attended the Shannon protest in November, I don't remember the exact date, and was very unimpressed with the attitude of a select few who thought it appropriate to harass people both entering and leaving the airport. Exactly what purpose did that serve? Did some of the protesters seek to alienate possible future protesters from the cause they claim to espouse?
There was a good chance that some of those people travelling in and out of the airport DO NOT support Bush in his warmongering. The anti-war movement, in a colloquial fashion, is becoming populist...which is good! Which needs to be harnassed! Just listen to the ordinary conversations of people at work or in the pub...there is a growing disgust at the US campaigns in Afghanastan, at the provoking of a coup in Venezeula, at the more than likely war in Iraq.
The mealy-mouthed fair weather protesters who will cause trouble for the sake of it, so long as they don't miss their bus back, do nothing for the PR of an otherwise admirable organisation. Cutting down the airport fence, while one of the organisers of the protest shouted vainly through a megaphone to stop just made the whole enterprise look weak and disorganised, and gave the guards more ammunition than if the protest passed off peacefully. And if this is the guards' favourite website, which I doubt, there would be more ammunition for them in the evidence of this bickering and point scoring.
What would really impress the likes of Michael McDowell and Co. would be if people just got behind the likes of Eoin Dubsky and Tim Hourigan who are doing good hard work, and presented a united front.
I know I'm a fair weather protester too, so maybe it's unfair of me to come over all preachy, but I think you deserve an explanation for the lack of wider public support...
