oil was heavy/viscous/very messy fuel-oil,biproduct of distillation for petrol and octane-used as fuel in ships eventually.

also:present wind and wave direction drives the spill eastward,but as the strong depression moves in from the north west the spill may move more northward ...that's right! towards us.
worst case wind and wave break up the spill so much harder to sponge.

the vessel was 26 years old single hull-double hulls obligatory in modern ships-however this vessel was registered in Liberia which has about 200miles of coast no industry or large ports but very liberal laws and nautical regulations...
most commercial vessels are owned from the richer nations,registered in Liberia,crewed by the world-spectrum.

The ship, with a Liberian owner sailing under a Bahamas flag, was chartered by the Swiss-based Russian oil trader and operated by a Greek maritime company.
It´s registry details are thus in the Bahamas.
This is known as a "flag of convenience".
The Diane sank off the coast of Brittany in 1999, the unemployed of France within "bus" distance were marshalled and sent to clean the beaches along wth students. Pay was relatively high. Several of my squatting community in London made the return journey to France to clean the Breton beaches of crude. In Spetember of 1999, the French government was exposed as not sharing it´s knowledge of the toxicity of the spill. neither the students nor the unemployed cleaners had been given adecquate protective clothing. They are now party to a law suit still in progress against the French State and live under heightened risk of cancer.
For information on ship registry details contact the World Maritime Organisation Albert Embankment London. A list of maritime authorities is available online, but the Bahamas is not on the list, nor is Ireland come to that.
Mathematical modelling on weather and sea systems began within two hours of the reported hull breach. Extra considerations include magnetic and tectonic anomolies in the sea bed area. That´s why the Dutch salvage comapany sought to bring the ship much further out.
Pandabear is going to be very busy with this one.
Crude Oil breaks down into solidified carbon material which is still found on beaches twenty thirty years later (how much time do you have?).

It is worth mentioning that Greenpeace international have a patchy record on deepsea (11800feet/3000metres) contamination. So they are being slightly tardy with the all out condemnation.
It might also be worth mentioning that the French disastor of 1999 was followed by increased nationalism, [Breton Independence Party, 13 Rue de Tunisia, Paris...lovely folk hi from Mr O´ asif] which culminated in the bombing of a Mc Donald´s and arrests of ecologicalists in early 2000.
Thus it would seem many of us have gone through this particular sticky patch before.

if you want to consider the maths involved think about 120,000 barrels of crude going to the uneven bottom of the sea.

the oil spill which was caused by "bad weather" in the Western European region which occured at the same time as this years most interesting meteorite shower, has caused the international community to activate ahead of schedule a little known about protocol on space co-operation and use of satelites for "civil protection" and monitoring of "ecological disaster".
go read about it at the European Space Agency.
If you´re curious about ESA look at the bottom of any €uro note where u will find a map of French Guyana, administered as an integral part of France a very centralised state, ESA has the capability to put a whopping 100kg of material into space every week at considerably lower rates than their main rivals NASA. IF you´re interested in launching stuff into space, I´d recommend ESA. One of my dead friends was cremated and his ashes were safely sent up by €SA, lovely does it.

Galizian fishing families get about 5000pts 30€ each a day from the PP government, this helped "buy" the votes in the Municipal elections on 23/5/03.
In total of those who "voted" 11,000 less chose to vote for the PP in Galizia.

It is estimated by Repsol the Spanish state oil company who finally took charge replacing the multi-state effort (remember the germans and french were first on the scene--- remember the Dutch salvage company said "don't sink it in deep water") that about 15% of the oil is still in the Prestige.
Repsol have thus developed a new technique to encase the wreck in concrete, because it was sunk in deep waters, everything is complicated by higher water pressure levels. Oil still leaves everyday only a few litres they say. Bathers this summer complained in the nieghbouring Austurias region that water shortages due to global warming had closed the free showers on the Beaches. One teaspoon (5ml) of crude oil mixed with organic material makes a mess of your swimsuit and is really difficult to get out of your hair.

"Chapapote" as this crude oil mixed with "dead" organic material is called is still found at time of writing on a weekly basis on a coastline stretching from Portugal in the West to France in the East.

This man is onw of the crown heads of Europe.
He is a Bourbon. They've been wearing crowns for a really long time. He has lots of friends and lots of uniforms.
He is unusual amongst European Kings in that he got the job by being appointed succesor to a general who toppled a democratically elected government 70 years ago. That general liked being a general so much that he called himself generalissimo.
We do not know much of the life of this man in the photo, except that he smokes cigars valued at 400€ each, and stays above and beyond politics.
Mostly these days he just looks bored, in a regal sort of way, and slightly bemused.
He is considered by many in his country to be the saviour of democracy because of something that happened a little over twenty years ago.
A captain of the Gaurdia Civil took over the parliament on Feb. 23 1981 and another general (who perhaps wanted to be generalissimo brought tanks out onto the street) and the telephone conversations between "insurrectionists" went something like this:
"que es España coño!"
"sí que es España coño!"
"coño España!"
"Sí viva España coño!"
Well the Young King went on TV and appealed for the restoration of democracy. And so it was, within a week the "insurrectionists" were locked up where they remain to this day in high security wings away from harm. If you live in Spain, you can see the first TV documentary on those 7 days and 7 nights, and of course listen to the "que es España coño!" which roughly translates as
"It's Spain cunt!"
"Yes it's Spain ya cunt!"

The documentary will be screened on Antenna 3, 23h45 this thursday. The anniversary of Chile's coup d'etat, as the armed insurrection by generals who typically don't seem to be very "eloquent" has sparked lots of "looking back" by all sections of the community.
