'Eco-anxiety' affects 78% of children under 12, a crisis that teachers say they are unable to cope with, new polling by Greenpeace has found. The solution? More ruthless exposure of children to alarmist material.

Fasting Aganist Taverns and for Veganism

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday November 19, 2002 01:08author by Andrew Bushard - Autonomy Partyauthor email autonomy_party at wowmail dot comauthor address 175 Briar Gate Road, I18, Mankato, MN 56001 USAauthor phone 507-385-0470 Report this post to the editors

An article discussing a fast in the USA for 2 good causes.

I believe it is most noble to resist and destroy the evil of this world. This should be a main purposes of one's existence. One issue that concerns me greatly is the issue of how the alcohol industry has destroyed this country. To me it a huge issue, but few others are much concerned. Many throughout history have argued and have demonstrated how this industry ruins humanity. As a person who has experienced second hand alcoholism, I can testify that alcohol = tears and sadness. We hear endless talk from conservatives about family values, but they are often spineless jellyfish about the issue of alcohol. On the other side of the coin, Marxists often express disdain about capitalism's injustice, but do not often enough boycott an industry which profits off the destruction of human health, the liquor industry. I believe it behooves both family value conservatives and anti capitalist Marxists among others to resist the decadent liquor industry. I believe that we should be boycotting and otherwise resisting what we find most repugnant.

Since Friday November 1st, 2002 I have been fasting, consuming only water, to protest the destruction of alcohol industry. As of writing (10/18/02), I am on day 18. I am shooting for 21 days. I am fasting to call on the taverns of this city to close down and erect vegan restaurants in the place of their previously destructive and decadent businesses. Why should the taverns sell harmful products when they could be selling something good? If the taverns of this city, choose not to do the right action on their own, then I encourage the local government to be smart like my campus, MSU, and to make this city and county dry. We don't need any more taverns, but we sure need more vegan restaurants. I also call on the taverns and legislators of other cities and counties, and even the nation at large, to do the same. I urge other nations of the world to do likewise. Fasting is beautiful and I seek to use this powerful tool for justice. I hope that others will be inspired to join me in this, whether you fast one day or 14 days or more, it all helps. At the very least, you can sign a petition I have created to call on those in power to make this nation a dry nation. If we want change, we must make profound sacrifices. We must work to dry the endless flowing tears caused by Alcohol industry. I hope this fast can dry some tears. I hope this fast can help destroy pervasive miasma.

As a representative of the worldwide liquor industry, speaking on behalf of such multinationals as Diageo and Bacardi, I'd like to concede defeat and graciously throw in the towel. We have begun the long process of turning all of our distilleries into lentil processing factories and our breweries should be reborn within a couple of months as greenhouses for organic vegetables.

This fast, bravely pursued by Andrew of Mankato, caught us all by surprise and we were left with simply no choice but to submit immediately and wind up our industry. In the face of this brave act, all of our forces are rendered impotent. Our legions of PR strategists are for once speechless, our dozens of bought governments around the world are in chaos and our corporate hierarchy are dejected, demoralised and defeated.

However, there is hope. Although it may cause our profits to dissappear completely and will very likely bankrupt us within hours, we will persevere and introduce some brave new brands to the market. With Guinness Kidney Beans (TM), Smirnoff Organic Rice (TM) and Bacardi Lentils, we hope to reconquer our historic market and re-establish our position as market leaders with unparalleled brand recongnition.

Lastly we would like to deliver a humble plea to the global public. We have been informed that there are plans afoot among the alcoholic community for one of their number to engage in a fast against our transformation. We beg you to hold your fire. Another catastrophic fast, even if it only lasts a few days, would utterly ruin us, destroy the jobs of thousands of workers and sink the global economy into an interminable depression. Please think of the children.

If you want to get pissed, brew your own and don't give a penny (sorry, an EU cent) to the multinationals. Wine is particularly easy to make. Try native Irish fruits and flowers - not to mention nettles, sloes and other such interesting plants. And I'm told spuds can be used to make something even stronger.

There are serveral homebrewing kits available over the internet. Also, I saw a mini whiskey kit available from the natural shop in Ranelagh (just opposite Xtra Vision, two doors down from M. McDowell's office).

Not only are these far healthier alternatives in (no additives, preservatives etc) insofar as drinking can be but the cost difference is huge. These became quite popular in the 80's when the price of alcohol began to rise strongly for the first time.

I think this is going to take off again as I'd imagine €5 for a pint of warm beer served in a place where you can't get a seat (or have a smoke/eat) would be going above the price threshold for most.

It might just be fun, too. Unless of course Mickey Martin spots a keg on his way to visit his collegue.
