Left of the Year Awards 2002

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday November 18, 2002 19:24author by Award Giver Report this post to the editors

It's coming towards the end of the year and it's time to nominate your 'Left of the Year'

The Left of the year must have contributed to the Irish Left in the year 2002. Nominations must be accompanied by explainations as to why the candidate deserves the title "Left of the Year 2002"

Here are a few nominations already recieved:

CLARE DALY. Clare has played a leading role in the struggles in the Airport, more recently in the City Jet baggage handeling dispite. This year she got over 5500 votes and nearly got elected to the Dáil. Also been involved in a range of activities as a Councillor such as campaigning against Bin Tax.

EOIN DUBSKY. Probably most recently noted for his active opposition to the US warplanes in Shannon where he spray-painted a warplane with anti-war slogans

JOE CAROLAN. Joe shot to prominance this year as a leading member of GR. When the May Day riot occured Joe was a prominant speaker on behalf of anti-capitalist protesters that were brutalised. Joe has taken up much of the responsibilities of GR since Rory Hearne's departure.

JOE HIGGINS. Joe continued to be the voice of workers in the Dáil this year. He played a crucial role in the initialisation of the Alliance Against Nice and he was successfully re-elected to the Dáil. Joe also kept up his international profile with a trip to the Social Forum in Brazil.

DAN FINN. Dan is the leading member of the dissedent "Socialist Alternative" that left the SWP this year. Dan was the SWP candidate in the UCD SU elections where the left scored a respectable 38%.

ANDREW FLOOD. Andrew was the leader of the Libertarians Against Nice campaign that succeeded in distributing tousands of anti-Nice leaflets.

Any more nominations?

Finghin - put more cars on back on the road by fighting for yuppies rights to have cheap insurance.

Nora Geraghty - the poster girl for the left. Defeated Birlusconi singlehanded in Florence

Joe Carolan - led the Globalise Resistance Reclaim The Streets party and called a press conference to explain it all to the media

Kevin Wingfield - whose hand is stroking the cat?

For hurrying Ireland through the 'New' Labour Phase without even making it into government. Ruari for lying in concert with bertie in the Dail on Article 133 on the eve of the Nice Referendum. Hey R. I'm calling u a liar in a publication - why don't u sue me.
Pat for having no policies except Anti FF rhetoric, using old FF Bunny Carr strategems to avoid ever saying anything that might scare Big Business, and for doing his best to hide the fact that the policy of his party is to oppose US Military use of Shannon Airport. Also their antidemocratic-bertie supporting tactics over speaking time for Technical group in the Dail.

Labour to follow the blueshirts down the plughole anyone? Pass the plunger!

The odds for "Left of the Year 2002" are as follows:

Clare Daly 3/2fav
Joe Higgins 2/1
Eoin Dubsky 7/1
Andrew Flood 9/1
Joe Carolan 10/1
Dan Finn 100/1

It's looks as if Clare Daly will win it this year, beating her party college into second place.

Despite Joe Higgins winning for the past 3 years it looks as if Clare Daly will win left of the Year 2002. Clare has had a very strong year, the bin tax work, the Airport, the elections etc.

It's unlikely that Eoin Dubsky or the others will put up much of a challenge to Daly and Higgins. Although Dubsky may get anarchist support due to his actions in Shannon.

It is quite obvious that this list of awards was drawn up by an elderly Catholic homosexual because the absence of women is striking. In order to redress the balance I nominate the following:
NORA GERAGHTY - unlike the sham activism of her louder colleague Joe Carolan, Nora works quietly and continually behind the scenes. Not one to be intimidated by the reformism of the political dynasty from which she springs Nora has climbed to the top of what is known as The Movement. She is now the leader of The Movement and has brought word of The Movement to young people all across Europe.

MARY HARNEY - a courageous and determined woman who has also thrown off the shackles of clerical Ireland and fiercely campaigned for a free market in abortion provision and mercedes.

We've been taking bets all week on "Left of the Year 2002". So far it's still really a 2 horse race, although there are a few dark horses that may gain support over the next while.

The odds are as follows:

Clare Daly 3/2fav
Joe Higgins 2/1
Eoin Dubsky 8/1
Peter Hadden 10/1
Joe Carolan 12/1
Andrew Flood 50/1
Tim Hourigan 75/1

Whoever you decide, right? After all, its not as if there's any voting mechanism in place, is there? And where did you get those odds? From your own imagination of course.
If you want to tell everyone that you think Clare Daly has done a great job this year, that's fair enough and well for both of you, but why not just say so?

There has been a committee selected of 5 people that will run the Left of the Year competition. This is the practice every year!

This year after the nominations are in we will probably put it to a vote. We're looking into setting up a website at the moment.

This is the first year that nominations are been accepted from Indymedia. So please put forward serious nominations. Only nominations that put forward genuine left activists AND with a serious reason will be accepted (Mary Hearney is not a left activist)

author by Raypublication date Thu Nov 21, 2002 12:19author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Who is on the committee?
Who were they selected by?
And previous years? Ha!
Who was nominated last year, and who won?
What was the nominating process last year?
Who were the judges last year?

Seriously, if this article started as a way of congratulating people who you think have done a good job, that's fair enough. But when you start posting odds and pretending that this represents something real... it doesn't do you or the 'winners' any credit.

so now the sp don't support the turkish hungerstrikers. well at least they are consistent, in 1981 militant opposed strike action in support of the irish hungerstrikers.

when the people of derry ignored the orders from militant and came out in a general strike, the militant condemned the strike as being sectarian.

perhaps the sp deserve the pro imperialist socialists of the year award asfter all.

Eamon McCann is not down as a nominee because there was not a good reason given why he should be on the list. He is a person active on the left, if you're serious about nominating him give a reason why he should be "Left of the Year 2002"

We're not taking nominations that are used just to insult others. We felt that Eamon McCann's nomination was just put down to have a go at the SP and was not serious.

This competition has been going for a while now. It started off as a debate a number of years ago at a new years party in the Bachelor Inn. This year we decided to open it up to the people in Indymedia. Last year Joe Higgins won it.

Firstly - who are you ?
Secondly - I second the nomination, because I like the work McCann does. He is articulate and passionate and has been fighting for the rights of people for a long time.

Thirdly - Can I nominate Feilim O'hAdhmail for his work in the IPSC ? Also Anthony McIntyre/The Blanket for the work done on various issue in a "united front against bullshit". Much needed in the Left !

Eamon McCann's nomination will go before the committee. I dont think you are sincere in your nomination. Tell me what he did over last year that deserves being given title of "left of the Year 2002". I still think that you are just having a go at SP, in your nomination of McCann you slag off the SP!

I will add Feilim O'hAdhmail if I knew who he is! what has he done? what is the IPSC? Same goes for Anthony McIntyre, who is he? what's he done?

This is a serious competition and only serious names will go on the shortlist. So stop just having a go at other groups and put forward real suggestions.
