The nuclear submarine HMS Trafalgar has run aground off the coast of Scotland while taking part in a military exercise, the Ministry of Defence has revealed.

One crewmen suffered a broken nose and another a strained back in the incident on the north west coast of the Isle of Skye.

But the MoD said the submarine's nuclear reactor was not damaged.

A spokeswoman said: "There is no damage to the pressure hull and a core integrity assessment of the nuclear reactor has been conducted. There is no risk to the public or crew.

"An investigation into this incident is under way.

"Until the findings of that investigation are known it is unhelpful to speculate on the circumstances surrounding this incident."

The submarine was taking part in a joint maritime training exercise and surfaced immediately after the incident.

The submarine, which was commissioned in 1983, will return to the Faslane naval base on the Clyde, where the damage will be assessed.

Local MP and Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy said: "The first reaction to this news must be one of relief that no hull breach or damage to the nuclear reactor has occurred, and no lives have been lost.

"But when a nuclear submarine is involved in an incident of this nature, with the potential for disastrous consequences, it is essential that a full investigation is undertaken, the conclusions of which must be made public."

The Royal Navy has 16 submarines in its fleet, 12 of which - HMS Trafalgar included - are nuclear-powered attack subs.

Apologies to any trad singers, no offence to the original
---------------------------------------------

Speed the U-boat like a shot from sling
"Oh, no" the sailors cry...
crashing the sub, (hoping nothing's leaking)
Into the Isle of Skye

How the crew gasped, reality grasped
Now we are in despair
Sonar is crapped, the captain is flapped
Trafalgar will need repair
Chorus: Speed the U-boat... etc.

What the world knows, what the media shows,
is nowt to what lies beneath
Tis more than some blows, and a bust bloody nose
Cover up and deceit.
Chorus:

Though the waves leap, how shall ye sleep?
Ocean's are full of dread
The nukes in the deep, silently keep
terror inside your head
Chorus:

Thinking fear will control, a deadly patrol
carries its frightful wares.
But we still have our soul, and peace is our goal
for we are Trident Ploughsares
Chorus:

On the Clydeside, the navy will hide
the death merchants of Faslane.
With purposeful stride, and life on our side,
We will cause peace to reign.
Chorus:

Two little old ladies succesfully smashed a Trident submarine with sledge hammers exercising a moral right to protect everyone from weapons of mass-destruction, what was really interesting was the court agreed and acquited them on the condition that they promise never to go near submarines with sledgehammers ever ever again.
This teaches us many things, the most of important of which is: never be without a little old lady and persuade her to carry the sledgehammer and the subsequent rap, if you can.

I support the tactical use of little old ladies on protests, they should be postitioned between nasty looking young police officers and nasty looking young protesters to bring an air of staid and tranquil protest.

I hope Gluiseacht have lots of little old ladies?

Faslane, thirty miles from Glasgow is home to Britains Trident Nuclear submarines. Next April come to the "really big blockade".

This is sure to be a really inspiring event - blockading the base and letting the world know that we won't stand for this shit. No to war, no to bombs and no to all weapons of mass destruction. It is a completely non-violent action and all those involved agree to be fully accountable for everything they do. If we blockade we are not doing wrong - we are up holding the law. It is the nuclear weapons that are illegal. The amount of money that is spent on these things is unbelieveable.

A group from Gluaiseacht will be travelling to this and hopefully many other Irish people will come along too!

Come to the really Big Blockade - a really quality arrest!!

I'm sure we can all feel safe in our beds tonight with the knowledge that the MOD is involved in making sure this nuclear submarine doesnt do any damage to the environment!
