Why I quit Miss World Why I quit Miss World Masja Juel, the current Miss Denmark, explains why she has decided to boycott the contest along with eight other finalists Hadley Freeman When I won the Miss Denmark title last year, I was very excited. I had never entered beauty pageants seriously before and I could not believe that I had won such a big competition. Then, when I found out in spring 2002 that I would be taking part in the Miss World pageant, I could hardly sleep because I was so happy. My friends and family were so proud of me and this would be the first time anybody from my country would be going to the final of this international competition. But in September I was told about the case of Amina Lawal and that she would be stoned to death in Nigeria simply for having sex outside of marriage. I just couldn't believe it. How can this kind of thing happen in 2002? What kind of country would do such a terrible thing? more at |

they pay the models in their advertising campaings very well, and I´m sure they´d love to put you in contact with other young Danish activists.
There are lots
Guerilla Gardeners
Indymedia photographers
and some arty people too.
failing that you could always mail me and we could meet for an informal chat on my pamhplet
"how to be a succesful polically aware gender stereotype".
It´s very popular with a wonderful reference section on aging activist J. Fonda and female circumcision issues as well.

Good on you.
Some context would have been better than hitting copy and paste.
It's an interesting piece, but there are lots of interesting pieces in the Guardian today. That's why they have a website
it wasn't just 'copy and paste' it was copy an enticing piece and past and click url to read the rest.
[of course urls for the guardian never work on this site, anyone know why?]
people would have complained louder if the whole article/essay was posted - people love to complain dont they?
Noble Earl..the best way to deal with tricky links is like this:
* copy the full URL of the page you are on
* go to http://www.makeashorterlink.com
* paste in your link and submit
* you'll get a new link something like
http://www.makeashorterlink.com/?23odgjlewr9r (random characters)
* use that for your link on this site. When it's clicked, it will forward you to the original link.
Sometimes the problem is that this site doesn't recognise where the link begins and ends because of strange characters.
Other times it "wraps" onto the next line. And when it's long and doesn't wrap, it makes the screen too wide!
For example, it's the comma in the Guardian address that is confusing the software here.
If you go to http://makeashorterlink.com/?K34624D52 it will bring you straight to the address after a 5 second pause.
(By the way you're right, it was just the intro as a teaser, but it's better to write your own comments and link to the article as back-up. It's not the most important thing in the world but if everyone was doing it it would be a pain to deal with, that's why I (and others) keep up a low-level moan...

thanks for the suggestion on the links - great solution and will do it in the future.
but on the issue of 'posting correctness' i don't really care. considering the whole purpose of this site is to spitball each other's political efforts, I don't really see why a little bit of interesting/worthwhile info (as subjective as that is) is such an offence.
Some days ago I wrote a piece leaving a very very long link. the last number wouldn´t fit in the window box. (it was a 3).
and it was worrying me. Thank you technological wizards of IMC for bringing us "shorter link", its great.
and if you follow the link here you´ll see something that the last Miss World was reported as having thoughts on.
-the use of oil.
Now I can´t fix a link to the interview with the old Miss World concerning Oil, because I´m a bit slow on the new technology.
