As readers will know (Because Pat C. told them on IMC newswire 24th October) Alexey Simonov of the Glasnost Defence Foundation, will speak at Buswells Hotel, Molesworth Street, Wednesday 30 October 2002 (Entry: Free) This is to mark the launching of a campaign by Amnesty International on the Russian Federation.

It has been reported on international newswires that the recent hostage crises in Moscow has been ended.
http://reuters.com/news_article.jhtml?type=topnews&StoryID=1637105

Indymedia was only able to provide a few Translations of information which left the Russian federation.
These can be found (with basic English translations) http://www.germany.indymedia.org/2002/10/32122.shtml

Translations:
http://fets3.freetranslation.com:5081/?Sequence=core&Language=German%2FEnglish&Url=http://de.indymedia.org/2002/10/32122.shtml

and
http://russia.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=3489&group=webcast

Russian indymedia have also produced translations.

http://www.russia.indymedia.org

"Paris, 24 October 2002 - The Chechnya Committee and the FIDH firmly condemn the action perpetrated, on 23 October, by an armed commando of Chechnya Independence fighters who have taken hostage hundreds of people in a Moscow theatre"
FIDH = Federation of Human Rights.
(a group in the former Soviet Union states working for human rights and press freedoms).

Swedish indymedia is still off line due to technical reasons, so the quality of reporting has admittedly been poor nor can the neutrality of opinions expressed be guaranteed.

If you don´t go through the links at least consider these words attributed to "an old man" by the Reuters correspondent;

one bystander, Igor Konstantinov, in his 60s, was in no doubt about what he thought.

"Putin has only one choice. (U.S. President George W.) Bush showed the world what to do with these bastards after September 11. It's Putin's turn to liquidate them in Russia."

..."Putin links Russia's conflict in Chechnya to the U.S.-led global war on terrorism, which he enthusiastically backed after last year's September 11 attacks on the United States."

other websites (though unvouched for include):
http://bliznetsy.ru/
http://adresa.ru/

Russian police have also been reported to have used a non-lethal gas to stun the hostage takers.
information on "non-lethal" weapons including gas may be found at;
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/non-lethal.htm
and
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2002-05/ns-nwk050802.php
(which is a reprint of a New Scientist article of May 11th).

Please don´t forget that for the forthcoming Prague NATO meeting of 46 heads of state, Czech police have been bolstered by an investment of 350 million KC on police gear.
It is suspected non-lethal gas may be used for the first "official" time in Prague. [Before they finally join the EU].

Swedish indymedia is still down,
I have not spoken to anyone yet I trust concerning the facts relating to the latest "terrorist event".
Amnesty International are calling for an investigation of the use of gas.
BBC report in link.
The bystander, Igor Konstantinov, in his 60s, referred to by Reuters seems as comical a character as any of my frivolous inventions.
BBC monitoring reported that the entire area had been sealed off.
This casts serious doubts on all "news", including the photographs on German Indymedia.

So the "facts" A Theatre was occupied by an armed group?
The Russian state authorities (Mr. Putin) said nothing.
Police and armed forces sealed off an area of suburban Moscow.
Reuters, BBC, AFP and Indymedia appeared to confirm the maybe "knee-jerk" reaction that this was the work of "islamic separatist Chechnyan rebels". [also termed kamikazee / suicide mission terrorists].
A group in France with links to Chechnyan independence groups called for a peaceful resolution to the crises.
Lots of dead bodies photographed, lots more in hospital and use of a "non-lethal" gas.

No more may I add in either speculation or hypothesis except I rather think "GAS" sounds terribly bad.... creepy almost.
& I don´t know what time the meeting is at nor shall I be there being safely out of the fray in Barcelona I suggest calling Amnesty.

A few Sundays ago I wrote a silly piece on our neighbours and friends the Russians.
its ID 14488.
Now the "Cardov" hasn´t been reported as arriving at Malta. The keen readers will remember the young naval cadets said Malta was the next port of call. I have been a little bit worried about those young russians. The keen readers will have noticed that I pointed out that theie course on leaving Barcelona would have brought them within forty eight hours plain sailing into contact with the NATO western Mediterranean Fleet.
Keen readers will remember that I said that´s a very very big fleet.
Anyway NATO are going to have a meeting in Prague.
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. Its one of our new neighbours in the EU, thanks to the good people of Ireland voting YES to the NICE Treaty.
Anyway the Czech state has spent lots of money "CK" not "€" on new public control security force toys. [they don´t have eurodollar yet but they do have lots of Mc Donalds] Included are "tear-gas" assignments. Now Gas is very very bad. We don´t like GAS.
Gas used against people is supposed to be illegal under really really old Treaties.
If you make Gas to use against people, we all get really upset and whip up military fervour. [Military Fervour is a very very special type of fervour and costs a lot more than the usual kind]
We shall use TV and Advert maintained Media to convinve everyone that you are a people worth attacking.
So don´t make Gas.
Now will the Russians be using this Gas again?
Will the world wonder more about Chechnya?
[Well most people can´t spell or say Checnnya so probably not].
Will Indymedia tell the truth about it all next time?
Well remember that article on Russian just two or was it three weeks ago, [I´ve a terrible memory].

Let´s all give "emergent forms of non-lethal weaponry and crowd control" very serious thought shall we?

And when the "Cardov" berths in Malta, I may give the Russians a bit less salt.

The gas is still unspecified.
Russian doctors claiming it as an anaesthetic.
German consultant working in the hospital saying it might have been a halucinogenic.

hmmmm.
¿gasous halucinogenic anaesthetics?
sounds like it might have been cooked up by a late night demon raver.

The British (bless ´em) are saying it was an illegal chemical weapon. (They know because they illegally tested it in the 1960s).

We do not know as of yet whether or not standard gas masks protect either policemen or protesters from this "gas".

watch this neutral zone space [with permission hopefully?]
[Ireland is a signatory to international conventions on biological and chemical weapons].

days Reuters qoutes American Embassy staff as thinking the gas was a narcotic.
this mornings Reuters piece was entitled "Opium connection", it has since been removed from the front page.
So the gas has been described as
anaesthetic
hallacunogenic
non-lethal
and now
narcotic.

What´s next?

¿fart gas?

Russia name gas used in Moscow siege

16:21 Wednesday October 30th 2002

The Russia Government has named the gas used to end the Moscow theatre siege, which led to the deaths of 119 hostages. The Russian Health Minister said that the gas used was Fentanyl, an opium based narcotic which is normally used as an anaesthetic.

Fentanyl is known to some as a "designer drug"
it is used in treatment of heart conditions and as a general anesthetic.
It is also used a drug similar to Ketamine Chloride a similar inhibitor.
as I wrote earlier, it seemed like something cooked up by a late night demon raver.
