Russia now it’s time for human rights Amnesty Public Talk Speaker: Alexey Simonov, Glasnost Defence Foundation Buswells Hotel, Molesworth Street, Wednesday 30 October 2002 (Entry: Free)

On the 29 October Amnesty International is launching a
world-wide campaign on the Russian Federation.

To launch the Campaign in Ireland, Amnesty has invited
Alexey Simonov, the President of the Glasnost Defence
Foundation to take part in a National Speakers Tour.
We hope that you will be able to join us at a public
meeting to mark the start of this exciting new campaign.

The Campaign will be launched at 6.30 pm on 30
October at the Amnesty Candle opposite Liberty Hall in
Dublin, at which time Amnesty members and supporters
will be asked to sign a petition and light a candle for
human rights in Russia. After this ceremony, Alexey
Simonov will address the public meeting in Buswells
Hotel at
8.00 pm.

While the campaign will focus on issues such as the ill-
treatment of juveniles in detention; violence against
women; torture, ill-treatment and racism directed at
ethnic minorities, especially Chechens; it will also
address the issue of freedom of expression.
Across the Russian Federation journalists who
champion truth and challenge the impunity of the state or
corruption suffer harassment, repeated arrest and even
assassination.
The Glasnost Defence Foundation also works on behalf
of Grigory Pasko who has been the subject of repeated
criminal charges because of articles he wrote revealing
the fact that the Russian navy was secretly dumping
nuclear waste in the Pacific. Pasko is one of the cases
being highlighted in the Amnesty’s annual Christmas
Greetings Card Appeal this year.

The Public Talk will take place in

Buswell’s Hotel,
Molesworth Street
8.00 pm
Wednesday 30 October 2002
