Exclusive interview on Article 133 of Nice Treaty with Brian Lenihan conducted in UCD today.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday September 24, 2002 15:42author by IMC RR Report this post to the editors

Read and weep. Thought FF wanted us to understand what NICE is about

(THE SCENE / FOYER OF A UCD ARTS ANNEX / BRIAN LENIHAN HAS TO BE HELPED BY THE GARDAI THROUGH A 50-60 STRONG BUNCH OF STUDENTS BLOCADING THE ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING HE IS ENTERING. HE IS IN UCDTO OPEN THE NEW FIANNA FAIL ARCHIVE/ HE IS SURROUNDED BY THE MEDIA WHEN HE FINALLY MAKES IT INTO THE FOYER AND THEY QUIZ HIM ON VARIOUS EDUCATION ISSUES AND WHY CHARLIE MC CREEVY DID NOT MAKE AN EXPECTED APPEARANCE / AN IMC JOURNALIST WITH A CAMERA IS PRESENT AND DECIDES TO ASK A QUESTION. HERE IS A TRANSCRIPT HOT OFF THE PRESSES BROUGHT TO YOU ON THE HUSH HUSH STRICTLY QT.

Brian Lenihan: Are you televising me as I speak

IMC Roving Reporter: I am yeah!

Brian Lenihan: Have you a journalists card?

IMC RR: I'm with Indymedia

Brian Lenihan: Yeah. Is this for broadcasting in a particular place?

IMC RR: It might be!

Brian Lenihan: Yeah. What I'm telling you is I will do my best, as the Government will, to protect your interests.

IMC RR: (Referring to reintroduction of student fees etc) You can't guarantee me?

BL: Of course I can't guarantee you this morning what will happen. All that I can guarantee is that I'll do my best.

IMC RR: Why did Mr. McCreevy not come here today?

BL: Mr. McCreevy had another appointment to do some time ago. It wasn't something that suddenly emerged this morning. We opened a new Fianna Fail Archive here this morning as well. That's what I was asked to do.

IMC RR: Do you understand why all these students are here and why they are protesting?

BL: Well first of all I know that there's 20000 students in UCD. There's a very small number of them here. And I think it is obvious too from some of the posters and some of the references in them that they're politically motivated.

IMC RR: Isn't that a good thing?

BL: There's references to the NICE Treaty for example.

POSTER BEING HELD BY UNKNOWN STUDENT AGAINST WINDOW FACING BL: "Charlie! No more lies! What is Art. 133 of the Nice Treaty."

IMC RR: And on that reference to the NICE Treaty - What do you think about that?

BL: Well I think it is a very important issue for Ireland. The eyes of Europe are now looking at us. We have already damaged ourselves enormously in the eyes of the World by our rejection of the people of Eastern Europe. Many of those opposing of course subscribe to the old Communist Ideology - and to those people who controlled them for so long.

IMC RR: Minister, Can I ask you about Article 133?

BL: What is in Article 133?

IMC RR: What is in Article 133?

BL: You asked me a question - what is in Article 133?

IMC RR: I'm asking you what is article 133?

BL: You tell me what is in Article 133?

IMC RR: I'm asking you Minister

BL: I'm not dealing with it here this morning. I'm not here to discuss it. I've read every article in the Nice Treaty.

IMC RR: Can you explain Article 133?

BL: You show me the text and I'll explain it to you.

IMC RR: Minister can you tell me what Article 133 is and how we will be affected and what GATS means with regard to the NICE treaty?

BL: Sorry, excuse me, I really have to go now. I'll tell you one thing though I belive about Nice. Our future is with Europe.

(BL WALKS OFF)

IMC RR: Will you tell me about article 133 Minister?

(BL KEEPS WALKING)

IMC RR: (Shouts after him) You're a fucking liar! Minister! Why can you not tell me about article 133?

(BL COMES BACK TO THE IMC RR)

BL: Really you should learn a little bit of manners in your profession. Unfortunately you're unworthy of your profession.

IMC RR: Minister you are avoiding the Question. Why are you evading the question?

BL: You should Learn the manner and courtesy of your profession.

IMC RR: What is article 133 minister? You don't know what article 133 is?

(BL WALKS OUT OF FOYER)

IMC RR MAKES A HASTY EXIT AS A NUMBER OF UNIDENTIFIED MIDDLE AGED MEN IN SUITS OBSERVE THESE GOINGS ON WITH GROWING INTEREST AND CONCERN.

Great stuff on the B.L interview! Let's rock them right up!

This is as serious as the 1918 general election.

Indymedia is flying, well done to all!!!

Article 133 needs to get mainstream attention though... has any media sources even touched on it? What about Sunday Business Post? They're usually have some integrity...

...shows these fools up for what they are. Bit of a 'red scare' tossed in too. I like the bit lecturing journalists on how they should behave. A bit like Enda Kenny making the obnoxious 'joke' about a Black leader and then telling journalists not to report it - fully sure that they would do as ordered. Scumbags.
However what is this 'Fianna Fail Archive'?, I am curious about that - does it have the truth in it or just freshly laundered documents. Furthermore why is it being housed in a university, presumably paid for with our money.

Why exactly should Indymedia reporters call someone a fucking liar?

You should be wondering why you're so proud of that.

I bet that's not in the NUJ guidelines that you say you follow...

The Irish people are not damaged in the eyes of the world what the Minister mean't to say was we are damaged in the eyes of the Corporate, American Business World.

We have not rejected the people of Eastern Europe We are arguing on their behalf too,it is in all our interest to tell the people of Ireland what Nice is really about...

The NUJ guidelines does it say you can't call a politican a "fucking liar"?

Personally I think the world would be a better place if journalists stopped being so effin polite to politicans who avoid the questions.

Espically to a lying cheat like Lenihan, the only thing that man deserves is to be placed in stocks alongside Mc Creevy outside the outpatient clinic at Vincents.

author by blissetpublication date Tue Sep 24, 2002 18:32author address author phone Report this post to the editors

think the fact interviewee fielded every question asked of him by mainstream news cameras at length and avoided this one like the plague is more significant. 'Liars' is an accusation I have seen aimed at politicians from Govt endlessly for the last few days. Is the problem bad language? Politicians I'm sure speak about 'Fucking' lefties / pinkos / commies etc plenty off camera.

Anyway I'm sure if we get complaints from the NUJ we can listen to it and see what they suggest as punishment for this particularly determined reporter.

Real Radical and Confrontational Journalism at last! Hopefully such antics might inspire some of the most cowardly members of our new society - the NUJ!
---------The NUJ and members are highly complicit in maintaining the vile corruption and lies suffered by the Irish people recently. They are as guilty as the committers of the crimes.
Crimes such as:

- Denying a fair Nice debate and providing obvious bias
- Refusing to report on GM crops, Shannon war port, U.S training flights
- Not reporting on the company that manufacturers skin bleaching soap for export to Africa
- Keep Ansbacher under raps
- Midly managing the Govt's environmental atrocities such as the toxic dumps

and, selling the soul of honest and courageous journalism - the kind which Marty O'Hagan and Veronic Guerin where both killed for.

The NUJ crew, with a few exceptions, are simply frightened puppets of a cute hoor regime that's selling Ireland to higher masters...

ROLL ON INDYMEDIA IRELAND!!!!!

To the person who commented on the NUJ guidelines - yes, we do follow them, the main purpose is in not participating in demos that we're covering, etc.

Personally I wouldn't use the phrase fucking liar in the context of a stand-up interview but I can't exactly see what the problem with it is. Certainly, there are many examples of interviews where the attitude of the "polite" interviewer is much worse.

However, I think there can be a perception problem if you are out-and-out hostile to an interview subject - it's much better to supply the rope and allow them to use it themselves rather than hang on sight. The balance is a matter of personal taste - challenging a politician is nothing new but unfortunately rare in the context of shabby insider Irish journalism.

Props to the IMC RR! Interviews like this are what I've always wanted to hear while I ground my teeth listening to Marion Finucane waltzing verbally with some bastard that won't answer the questions.

This is one of the most revealing interviews I've seen published with any politician in years. The paucity of the fuckers responses is an insult to anyone.

Never swear at a politician. it gives them the (perceived) right to ignore you and (more importantly) the issues you wish to raise. See Kurt Vonnegut (I forget which book but they're all worth reading.)

It also goes for Kevin Myers. No one need take anything he has to say on lone parent families seriously any more.

I'm not talking here about rights and wrongs, free speech and censorship - only about tactics.

lenihan had long ignored RR's question before he called him a fuckin liar.....

The only politician in this country who appeared on the front page of a paper branded a "liar" was Gerry Adams.

somehow i don't think rr is looking for a career with The Evening Herald

No wonder nobody takes left-fascists seriously.

I love it when you lot 'play journalist'. It's funny.

You hide behind your politics to shield your lack of talent and non-existent training. Such a cop out.

No journalist, regardless of his/her personal political beliefs, would call someone a 'fucking liar' on camera and expect to be taken seriously. If Lenihan had turned around and called the IMC "reporter" a naive little bollocks, you'd all be crying into your lentils about what a cunt he was!

Why should the journalist become part of the story?

Grow up and maybe people will take you, and your message, seriously.

Journalists my cock....

Effective liars don't call reporters (or other members of the public) rude names. "Professional journalists" don't call effective liars names. Both live happily.

The effective liars/politicians continue to lie and lie and the "professional journalists" dance around them.

Sounds great.

Meanwhile I'll remind you that Indymedia.ie's policy is that comments containing personal abuse will be deleted.

author by not surprisedpublication date Sat Feb 26, 2005 16:48author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Threatening me with censure is about all I would expect from you. It's usually the indymedia way.

Did anyone censor the Indymedia "roving reporter" for the personal abuse directed at Lenihan, and repeated on this site? I doubt it. He is an individual too, is he not? Or will we see more head-in-th-sand, selective moralising by miserable et al......?

By the way, my "abuse", which obviously hurt so much, wasn't directed at any individual. So how it can be personal, I don't know.

However, it could be construed as directed at the hegemony of the left-fascists which dominate this site.

No different from the abuse directed at the hegemony of liberal society-types or free-marketeers by your average common-or-garden Indymedia inhabitant. And that includes the "editors".

As I said, hide behind your politics to shield the fact that most Indymedia posters don't know the first thing about journalism, totally misunderstand how messages are communicated, and henceforth will always be in a very small minority.

What's wrong with admitting to being a mere blog? Why insist you are any sort of an alternative to mainstream media?
