Gardai face prosecution over May Day riots

12:42 Thursday September 19th 2002

Six Gardai could face prosecution for their part in riots in Dublin during this year's May bank-holiday weekend. They were filmed using batons on anti-globalisation protestors and now, according to the Evening Herald newspaper, a report on the case is about to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, recommending charges. The news comes just days ahead of another anti-globalisation protest in Dublin city centre. Another protest has been organised for this Sunday, the same day as the All Ireland football championships and Dublin's participation in European Car Free day. This time however, Gardai say they are much better prepared for the demonstration.

I dont remember a riot caused by an anti-global protest.

Well not in dublin during the mayday w/e.

I remember a protest illustrating a common ideal of pedistrian friendly city ceneres.

is that what they mean?

well, i don't remember any protest whatsoever, but I do remember a great party! The Evening Herald reported that spray painting and postering had appeared all over the city advertisng the next 'protest' and that Gardai "intelligence" believed the 'demonstration' to be taking place at Stephen's Green - so much more "Gardai intelligence" tehehe! This should be fun ;)

If they do ever see a court room I am sure they will be let off. Certainly if the cases of the Burlington protesters are anything to go by.

The bourgeois courts will in all likelihood back up the Gardai. What we need is a genuinly impartial workers inquiry into these Gardai.
