Splits in the SWP leadership over election policy revealed. 3 tendencies emerge.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday September 11, 2002 20:12author by El Bandito Report this post to the editors

It's believed that there is a split over the question of elections in the SWP. These divisions erose before, during and after the recent Dáil elections.

It is believed that the SWP are split over election policy.

Grace Lally is believed to hold an abstentionist position. Should the SWP ever get elected she argues that they should abstain from Parliament. A position sonwhat similar to Sinn Féin's old position.

The anti-election tendency is headed up by Kieran Allen. Allen argues against standing for elections at all. It is believed that his views about elections were formed when he himself stood for election in England and did disasterously.

On the other hand Richard Boyd-Barrett is the strongest advocate for elections in the SWP. Boyd-Barrett was the strongest preforming SWP candidate in the recent Dáil elections, receiving 876 votes. He argues that the SWP position should be similar to the SP position, ie use elections for getting your politics out among the working class and use elected positions as a platform.

After the high vote that Militant Labour (now Socialist Party) received in the Dublin West by-election of 1996 the SWP changed their position on elections. Their official line is now that of the Boyd-Barrett tendency. However due to their disasterous preformances in 1999 local elections and the recent 2002 Dail elections, this position may come under some strain.

The meeting of the Irish Anti War Movement is of course today Friday at 7.30 as noted elsewhere and not Thursday as I mistyped in my posting above.

It looks set to be a good meeting to which can give a boost to the anti-war preparations.

Those not joined at the hip to their computer screens might think about coming along.

Oh joy!
I knew that I'd finally catch Kevin's eye, if I could just manage to complain about enough posts.

(Unfortunately Kev's eyesight obviously isn't what it used to be, or he would have seen that the 'anarcho-censors' trying to get this post deleted are members of the SWP)

I don't care whether the post is deleted or not. It's not my place to egg on Ray and the anarcho-censors.

The posting is invention. In other words it not true. You can quote me on that if you're interested.

For those of you with something better to do than this non-sense come along tomorrow (Thursday) to the IAWM public meeting in the North Star Hotel, at 7.30 pm get organised agains the war, take leaflets and help build for a national demo on the 28th of Sept.

For those with who live in a coffin and only come out at night carry on with this thread -- and good luck to you.

This posting is factually incorrect and should be removed.

author by C.publication date Thu Sep 12, 2002 13:14author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Could you please outline where the post is factually inaccurate. On reading (I didn't post it and think it's boring - only looked cos it came up on the list) it seems a tough one to prove:

Grace Lally is believed to hold an abstentionist position

Allen argues against standing for elections at all

He (RBB) argues that the SWP position should be similar to the SP position, ie use elections for getting your politics out among the working class and use elected positions as a platform.

The first point cannot be disproved - the second two could possibly be. Unless these statements are factually inaccurate I don't see why the post should be removed..

Reason to remove posts includes: "infactual or obviously false posts - the onus is on the author to check and confirm facts - if a factual error is brought to our attention it will be removed."

This post is innacurate in every thing it says accept for the number votes cast and as such be removed.

author by Brian Cahillpublication date Thu Sep 12, 2002 12:58author address author phone Report this post to the editors

This kind of post isn't particularly useful or interesting. The SWP leadership may or may not have internal disagreements over the issue of elections. I don't know, and frankly, so what if they do?

I also don't think that it is a good idea to personalise discussions. Attributing views to individuals contrary to those they express publically is unhelpful. How does the first poster know that any of the stuff about what various SWP leaders "really" think is accurate? And if this style of debate becomes widespread, what's to stop somebody from spreading rumours about what he/she "really" thinks?

Indymedia is an open newswire.
If you think there should be more articles about the war then its up to you to contribute them.
As long as the stuff that's posted falls within the guidelines then its not the responsibility of IMC what it discusses.

OOps. Ray is right (this time).
Nevertheless this thread is still rubbish and amounts to simple 'stirring the pot'.

- A Sinn Fein comrade posted a reasonable plea for unity on the left. This was wiped, presumably coz it's not news.

This English based cult, the SWP, is irrelevant to the problems of the Irish people.

A Sinn Fein comrade posted a reasonable plea for unity on the left. This was wiped, presumably coz it's not news. However shite like this is deemed worthy. The eyes of the world are watching.

The IMC crewe need to catch themselves on and turn this into real media. There's a f.u.c.k.i.n.g war about to break big time and you facilitate this type of degeneration. C'mon get serious...
