 The environmental organisation An Taisce has revealed that it is considering legal action to prevent the construction of a motorway through the site of Carrickmines Castle in south Dublin. Previously unknown aspects of the site were uncovered during the construction of the motorway and works were suspended to allow for an archaeological dig. However, the National Roads Authority is to evict the archaeologists from the area today and plans to resume construction on Monday. In a press conference today, An Taisce accused the Government of failing to appreciate the historic significance and value of the site. Spokesman Ian Lumley said the NRA has refused to meet heritage officials half-way. “Compromise proposals have been put to the National Roads Authority and have been rejected,” he said. “Most of the archaeological area is to be built over by a motorway and equally damaging roundabout and slip-road. "Those last two in particular could be realigned to allow a significant amount of the site to be preserved and maintained for public visit and viewing.”
