Academic publishing is in crisis. Now a multi-billion dollar industry where researchers pay journals to publish their papers, the old guarantees of quality and accuracy have been stripped away, says John MacNab.

category kerry | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Friday July 03, 2015 09:10author by Eoin Report this post to the editors

On Tuesday 23rd June, the exhibition "If I could say one thing to other communities" was launched in the Killarney Public Library which focuses on peoples with experiences of challenging the Corrib Gas Project. The exhibition will run until Saturday 4th July.

A four-year research project (2010-2014) by Jerrieann Sullivan sought to identify and share useful knowledge from the experiences of challenging the Corrib Gas project. Part of the research has been used to create a visual exhibition in which people respond to the question: 'If you could say one thing to other communities facing an unsafe development planned for their area, what would it be'?

The exhibition launch was addressed by Jerrieann Sullivan, Terence Conway - Shell to Sea spokesperson,  Eamon Browne - Killarney librarian, John O'Shea - Comhlámh member who organised the exhibition showing and launch evening.

Library Manager Eamon Browne said that it was the first time the library had displayed an exhibition of research and photography like this one and hoped that people would gain something from it.

Jerrieann Sullivan thanked all the people who had taken part in the research and had helped prepare the exhibition and event.  She spoke of how delighted she was to have the exhibition displayed in a public library for the first time.  She said that she hoped that some of the information in the exhibition could be useful to people in their own communities.

Terence Conway gave a brief rundown of the campaign against the Corrib gas project and where the project at the moment.
John O'Shea spoke about his time in Colombia and Peru, in particular about his time living in a community in Northern Peru that was fighting to access to clean water and against an open pit gold mine in their area. He spoke about the similarities that he saw between this community in Peru and the community in Mayo resisting Shell.

After the talks there was great engagement and discussion from the audience on topics such as media, the EPA and fracking.

This is the first time that the exhibition has been displayed in a public library.  The exhibition has previously been displayed at venues previously including the annual Sports in Belcoo Co. Fermanagh, the National Ploughing Championships, at the 2015 Grassroots Gathering held in Drimnagh and at the offices of Comhlámh in Dublin. If you wish to organise a showing of the exhibition in your area then please contact Jerrieann at [email protected]
