Dublin - Event Notice Thursday January 01 1970 Call For Hands Around Moore Street to Save National Monument from 1916 Rising![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rally to support development as a national monument This terrace in Moore St. was the last site of resistance of the GPO garrison, Volunteers and Citizen Army, Cumann na mBan and Fianna, (about 100 people) after the evacuation of the GPO. It was therefore the last HQ of the Rising also. A number of fighters and civilians died in the street also. The site is neglected and under threat from developers. Three houses in the terrace were designated a "national monument" after a campaign years ago but the site has been allowed to be run down while also a property developer has sought to turn the three houses into a café and toilets area as part of a wider shopping mall development. The Save Moore Street campaign wishes to develop the houses and area as a battleground interpretive centre instead and wishes the whole terrace to be preserved and developed appropriately. |
