Three-Star General Was Behind Harsh Treatment of Bradley Manning

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Saturday August 11, 2012 21:23author by pat c Report this post to the editors

The conditions under which Bradley Manning was held in didn't just originate with low level guards, the orders came from the top. But from Private to General they all collaborated in the maltreatment of Bradley Manning. Full text at link.

An order to submit WikiLeaks suspect Bradley Manning to harsh and allegedly illegal treatment in prison apparently came from the upper echelons of the Marine Corps. According to military e-mails released to Manning’s defense, a three-star general was the force behind the marching orders to hold Manning as a maximum-custody detainee under prevention-of-injury watch, or POI — orders that resulted in severe conditions at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia, that left Manning isolated and repeatedly mistreated by his guards.

“These e-mails reveal that the senior Brig officer who ordered PFC Manning to be held in MAX and in POI was receiving his marching orders from a three-star general,” Coombs wrote on his blog. “They also reveal that everyone at Quantico was complicit in the unlawful pretrial punishment, from senior officers to enlisted soldier.”

Manning was removed from Quantico in April 2011 and transferred to Leavenworth following heavy criticism and complaints from his defense attorney about how the Marine Corps brig was treating him. The Army tried to downplay the reason for the move at the time, saying there were a number of factors behind the decision, but also didn’t dispute that Manning’s treatment at the brig was one motivating factor.

Minor quibble with your phraseology

"Harsh Treatment" is nothing but a euphemism for TORTURE

calling it "Harsh Treatment" is just playing their game

The ever-increasing rate of corruption of language the world has experienced recently is one of the weapons in the arsenal of the Elite.

Can we here at Indy.ie at least not engage, however unwittingly, in that game too ?

Otherwise we're playing by their rules

And when we allow ourselves to be conned into playing by the rules set by our opponents we will always lose.

I didn't write the article. If you have a problem with the terminology take it up with the author. The piece above supplied important information.

Em...it's fair comment as you actively chose to post this particular wired article as opposed to something more balanced. I agree with the previous poster. "Harsh treatment" is when you shout at and smack your dog once for peeing on the floor.

A year or more in solitary, sleep deprivation, enforced nudity with one 20 minute assisted walk in heavy shackles per day, not to mention messing with the thermostat etc amounts to more than "harsh treatment" and it is more than "allegedly illegal" to do so, not to mention without charge, for so long.

Wired are colluding in what is clearly a transparent attempt in a widely read MSM publication to emphasise words like "harsh treatment" and "alllegedly illegal" rather than plain old "torture" to attenuate the perception of severity of bradley manning's treatment amongst the general public, especially in the geek community where more sympathy towards somebody like Bradley might exist.

Watch out for plenty of other MSM outlets using the exact same attenuating weasel wording. Indy should refer to it in words that convey it as the deliberate systematic extended borderline torture it was.

I think you should maybe at the very least change the headline accordingly if you must quote a conservative MSM mouthpiece like "wired". Preferably don't link to this consumerist cheerleader rag at all?

wired often posts insidious crap like this:
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/12/iran-captures-d...rone/
propagating the fake "norm" that Iran is a nuclear threat

and this government propaganda press release on Syria:
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2012/12/syria-chemical-...ns-3/
no doubt attempting to build grass roots public support for US intervention if necessary

and this very misleading "headline propaganda" aimed at, guess who? Wikileaks protector Ecuador of course.

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/12/security-post-la...jail/

What a coincidence! It was misleading because later in the article it emerges that Correja personally intervened to let him go stating "he had nothing to hide and that “I give permission to publish all my data.”.

But they know very well that more often than not people often don't read more than the headline in a political story.

And that's just some of the current front page. It's a publication peppered with insidious propaganda.
