TD Richard Boyd Barrett is to address a public meeting in Killarney opposing the household charge.
95% of the eligible population have not registered to pay.
Although the new tax is originally scheduled to start at e100, the aim, according to the Commission on Taxation, is to impose a charge of e563 on the average house. After 2014, a water tax will be added, giving a combined charge which could reach e1,000 a year.
95% of the eligible population have not registered to pay the charge. Most people recognise the introduction of the Household Charge next January for what it is: the next phase of the implementation of the Fine Gael /Labour plan to continue the disastrous policies of the previous government, which are unashamedly designed to make ordinary people pay for the banking crisis and the EU/IMF deal.
Meetings elsewhere have been well attended. 500 people turned up to a meeting in Cork city, and even small villages are reporting turnouts of up to 100. The campaign has already established a working group in Tralee. There one woman declared, "“I can’t pay, I won’t pay. I’ve had enough of cuts and charges. They can take me to Tralee Court if they like but I won’t pay”.
The aim of the public meeting is to give voice to people’s anger at the new tax and to organise a campaign of non-payment.
The Killarney meeting will be at the Malton Room, Malton Hotel on Monday 13th February at 8PM
