An annual fundraiser for the families of Irish POW's. This coming December 25th will mark the 35th consecutive CABHAIR Christmas Day Swim in the Grand Canal , Inchicore , Dublin ! " I'm gonna have to knee him into the water......" CABHAIR Christmas Swim , 25th December 2010 , Dublin. Hi ! It began - properly structured and organised - in 1976 ,as a ‘fundraiser with a difference’ , combined with the need to gain extra publicity for a situation which was then - as now - making world headlines . Those that sat down together in early September 1976 to tighten-up the then ‘hit-and-miss’ affair were a dedicated team who fully understood that to fail in their business would not only bring derision on them and the issue they sought to highlight , but would give their enemy a publicity coup which they would exploit to the fullest extent . With that in mind , the team persevered - favours were called-in , guarantees were secured , provisions obtained and word dispatched to like-minded individuals in the near-locale . At the appointed time on the agreed day - 12 Noon , Christmas Day 1976 - a soon-to-be 35-years-young event was ‘born’……. The CABHAIR Christmas Day Swim is , thankfully , still going strong and will be , as mentioned , 35-years-young on December 25th next! Sponsored Swim * Christmas Day * 12 Noon * Grand Canal * 3rd Lough* Inchicore* Dublin* Pics and a write-up re the 2010 Swim can be seen at the 'Related Link' below. All Welcome! Thanks, Sharon. |

CABHAIR have confirmed five (heavily-sponsored!) swimmers , so far , with another two 'probables' and one 'possible' : also confirmed is the arrival of 'Santa' , mince pies , swans in 'attack mode' and evil elves 'guarding' the gateway !
It's looking like this year's Swim will be as successful as the thirty-four that have gone before it , and all in aid of thirty-two..... ;-)
I'll post more updates here re the Swim as soon as I get same.
Thanks,
Sharon.
"He says he's been here since last year.......! "
Hi !
Six swimmers have now been confirmed for the Inchicore Swim , and CABHAIR have also organised Christmas Day swims in Wexford and Armagh : details to follow.
Thanks!
Sharon.
" I'd much rather be in Wexford. Or Armagh.....! "
Hi !
The CABHAIR Christmas Day Swim in County Wexford will see six swimmers take to the water at Rosslare Strand at 11am , with the County Armagh Swim going ahead at 12 Noon in Craigavon Lake - proof positive that it's not only we Dubs that are crazy.....!
Thanks,
Sharon.
Hi ! Two swimmers have been confirmed for the CABHAIR, Swim in Craigavon , unless any are still in there from last year...... Thanks, Sharon.
Hi ! The 35th consecutive CABHAIR Christmas Swim was held , as planned, yesterday in Inchicore , Dublin - on what was , compared to last year , a fine Summer's day ! Five sponsored swimmers took to the water (with 3 doing the same in Craigavon Lake and 5 in Wexford) , with one early 'casualty' who wasn't allowed by the Organisers to take part , for possible health reasons. Also , Santa was in great form , despite a twenty-five minute delay forced on him by armed State thugs , and a man with a guitar entertained the crowd in competition with twin-speakers blasting out Irish Rebel songs : in between all of which money was raised for Republican prisoners..... More at the 'Related Link' below , including a few pics and a link to three 'Swim' videos and over eighty additional pics ! Thanks , Sharon.
All won Gold , but wrapped themselves in 'Silver' !
Santa was 'delayed' , but eventually 'hip-hopped' his way to the Swim....
prisoners?
.....prisoners. As stated in the piece. Thanks anyway ! Sharon.
Well done to the swimmers in Dublin, (and Wexford Armagh) as well as the organisers for the swims for Republican prisoners/cabhair
Hi M. Brody ! Thanks for your comment - appreciated ! And it gives me the chance to 'butt' in and add that each of the five swimmers in Dublin was presented with a hankie from the prisoners in Portlaoise , and a raffle for a bodhrón was held between the swimmers after they had earned their money - the winner was Dougie , one of the regular swimmers for CABHAIR. Thanks again , Sharon.
Our blog was emailed a few pics from the CABHAIR Swim in Wexford , but only the following one was deemed suitable for publication - the rest of the pics showed the five lads in various stages of dress and distress as it finally dawned on them that 'the beach' was not , alas , the new nickname for the local , heated, swimming pool....... ;-) ! Also - our 'non-swimmer' in Dublin spent the last four days contacting those who had sponsored him , and offered them their money back (Declan was unable to fulfill his side of the bargain , for health reasons) : not one person asked for the few bob to be returned to them , asking, instead, for it to be donated to Cabhair ! Much appreciated , folks - grma ! Thanks, Sharon.
CABHAIR Swim , Wexford - 25/12/2011 . Five swimmers seek shelter behind a banner.....!
