Pointing out that, after narcotics and arms, the trade in wild animals is the most valuable illegal trade, Dublin Labour MEP Proinsias De Rossa this afternoon urged the European Commission to take a range of integrated actions to halt the hunting and trading of wildlife meat for human consumption, also known as ‘bushmeat’. Mr. De Rossa said that both EU and national development aid policies must be ‘conservation audited’ to ensure that they supported the efforts of local governments to eliminate the hunting and trading of wild animals, while also assisting local communities to obtain other affordable sources of protein.

Mr. De Rossa has authored a report on the trade in bushmeat passed in the European Parliament today. ... read full story / add a comment

*US military Out of Shannon and Raytheon Out of Derry*

The Global Women’s Strike calls on all women to join the women’s anti-war vigil at Shannon, from midnight tonight to noon on Tuesday 6th January – Women’s Christmas in Ireland.

In this autonomous women’s action, we join women from Shannon, veterans of Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp and of the 2003 Shannon peace camp, students, housewives, teachers, office workers . . . We join with women and men in Derry who on Wednesday will vigil all day to demand that Raytheon, giant US arms manufacturer, get out of the city. A Cháirde,

A statement by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) follows. The message is radical and is a break from all that the ETUC has said and done in the recent past. We will see what is its real meaning.

The ETUC's comments on the socially negative features of the draft European Constitution help organisations in Ireland like DAPSE.
