This is an really interesting article written by Richard Moore for the Southeast Voice in Wexford. In it he asks what Ireland should do in these present times where it is clear huge changes are afoot in the global economy. I would highly recommend people to read the original in full for its insight. Richard Moore has been writing about global issues for a number of years and has been attempting to truly understand how system works. A few years ago he wrote a book called: Escaping The Matrix and a host of other articles. In more recent times, he has begun to focus on grassroots organising and how to reform communities and democracy from the ground up. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Sometimes coincidences happen in a timely way, while at other times they appear to happen but are actually coordinated events. On Monday, the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan announced that Facebook, the popular social networking site, was setting up its head office for Europe in Dublin. Since Facebook doesn't actually make anything, it will have a negligible effect on the economy, but it sends the right sort of signal. At the same time (around midday on Monday) the profile page for the Shell to Sea campaign was removed from Facebook. Some Shell to Sea groups remain, but as anyone who uses Facebook will tell you, having a profile page is where the action is. Shell to Sea had a popular one, with lots of "friends" and activity on the page. It was very useful in spreading information about the campaign, especially outside Ireland. So Mary Coughlan goes on the radio to talk about Facebook and how its arrival in Ireland sends a strong signal. At the same moment, the Shell to Sea page is removed. Coincidence? ... read full story / add a comment

As the banking sector celebrates the government bailout the mainstream media have sought to capitalise on their readers formerly dormant anti-capitalist sentiment, with those journalists and editors that still retain an inkling of their activist youth revealing in the opportunity to indulge in some populist rhetoric, MediaBite takes a look at the media's performance over the boom years and asks whether the media, not just the bankers and developers, should be held to account for their part in bringing on this economic crisis. ... read full story / add a comment

Islamophobia has replaced anti-semitism as the unifying ideology for the extreme right in Austria where neo-fascist rivals Heinz-Christian Strache and Jorg Haider utilised slogans such as “Homeland instead of Islam” and “Vienna must not become Istanbul” to make huge gains in last week’s national elections at the expense of the Conservative OeVP and Social Democrats SPOe parties . As the elections were taking place more than 90 Muslim graves were severely damaged at the cemetery in Traun, near Linz in what police believe was an organised action. ... read full story / add a comment

Under pressure from the US and other nuclear powers, Micheál Martin has agreed to a proposal allowing India - a non-signatory of the NPT - to engage in nuclear trade. This constitutes a shredding of Ireland's historic commitment to the NPT and shows that there is not a principle on earth on which our government isn't prepared to capitulate - presumably for the right price. ... read full story / add a comment
